Throughout the semester we have examined some of the challenges and shortcomings of the typical response to crime in the United States. Restorative justice is viewed as an alternative approach with the potential to address the harms of crime through a process of restoration and reintegration, involving victims, those who committed offenses and community members. What do you think about restorative justice?

  • Read Case 2.1: Hacking into Harvard, located here or on page 71 in your textbook. As applicants began to defend themselves against the penalties handed out by the business schools, they appealed to both consequentialist and nonconsequentialist criteria to support their actions. Some responded by pointing out that their intentions were never malicious, while others argued they did not think checking their application statuses would cause any real harm. Review the case study and analyze the actions of the students from a Kantian perspective. Consider whether the actions taken by the hackers were permissible according the standard of universal acceptability.

Affective Computing Input

Researchers are experimenting with human emotions as a type of input. A development called affective computing uses input devices such as video cameras and skin sensors with software similar to speech recognition programs to allow a computer to read a users emotions.

Your task: Explain what an affective computing input system would look like for your favorite app or program. Tell which emotion, based on video or skin sensor or sound input, would create which action, for example, when my app senses that I am sleepy, based on my eyes looking heavier, start a counter to turn off the app after 15 minutes. Or when my app senses that I am nervous, based on my hands getting sweaty, launch a calming music app to play in the background.

Cover at least five (5) emotions. Some emotions you might consider include (but are not limited to) happiness, anger, sadness, frustration, fear, surprise, sleepiness, embarrassment, disappointment, pride, nervousness, curiosity, impatience, joy, and hunger.

please add on to the following in regards to the decision of the judges on the case:

Justice Gorsuch ruled based on sex discrimination. Justice Gorsuch points out that the case dealt with Stephens gender identity and that sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids (Supreme Court of the United States, 2019, p2). Breyer specified that the problem did not stem from Stephens inability to perform her job but on her gender identification.

Justice Samuel Alito argued that the concurring opinions were based on assumptions of what is included in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Since society did not require transgender to be a part of sex discrimination, it cannot be interpreted because it was not explicitly stated.
