Action Campaign

A hospital is planning to purchase new telemetry heart monitors for the intensive care unit (ICU), emergency department (ED), and intermediate care unit (IMCU). To make the capital purchase productive, hospital administration forms a committee consisting of the unit managers, nursing representatives from each unit, a bio-med individual, and the financial officer. Each unit is allowed representation based on the number of nurses employed on the units. This results in three ICU nurses, three IMCU nurses, and one ED nurse.

Management is concerned about the costs of replacing the telemetry monitors; therefore, the financial officer pushes for the cheapest product, insisting that budget constraints and decreased revenue require the purchase of a less expensive system. However, the ICU, IMCU, and ED representatives gather after the meeting to discuss their support for the most expensive system. They devise a proposal that outlines the uninterrupted flow of patients with the system, explains how the telemetry units meet each areas needs, and demonstrates how the system will save money in the long term.

They create a chart that compares the two models, demonstrating how the more expensive system could enhance patient outcomes. They convince the bio-med representative to side with them based on their knowledge that his mother is in the ICU and could benefit from the outcome.  The nurses also gain support from several local cardiologists for their desired system.

Step 2:

Describe how the nurses used political strategies to influence the decision.
How does this case reflect the political power of nurses?
How did the nurses demonstrate the political skills described in the text?
What were the purposes behind the nurses forming a coalition?

Assessment task details and instructions

Different manufacturing processes have different strengths and weaknesses as some are best suited to making small numbers of customized products, while others excel at producing large volumes of standard item. Companies must therefore carefully consider the strengths and weaknesses of different processes and make appropriate decisions as part of their overall business strategy not just in relation to the right equipment but also to include people, facilities and physical layouts and information systems (Bozarth and Handfield, p. 55). Consequently, an ideal manufacturing system must be flexible and yet efficient, with low unit production costs.

Based on the above, you are asked to take as an example a product or a service from an industry that you are familiar with (e.g., food, technology, healthcare, retail, services, automotive), and critically:

i. Examine the current process design of that product or service in alliance with the 4 vs model and illustrate the operational process by using either a Flow Chart or Value Stream Map technique.
ii. Discuss how implementation of Lean Principles and Just -in- time (JIT) manufacturing may assist in achieving a more flexible and yet efficient process design. Justify your answer by referring to the 5 Performances model.
Please follow a report format. Therefore, you should have a title page, contents page, sections and sub sections, page numbers, appendix section etc. Please note if you are uncertain on how to present and structure a report then visit the university library and ask for assistance. Please do use diagrams, illustrations, tables, graphics etc. wherever these are helpful, and remember that these do not count towards your word limit. If you do use these, please do not put them in the appendices if they are part of your discussion. Appendices are the appropriate places to put supporting material, however, remember if the reader is satisfied with the main points of your discussion; the supporting information within the appendices may not even be reviewed.
Please try to use theory explicitly at all stages, but do not spend too much time describing a theory. While you must be explicit about the theories, models, techniques etc. that you use, you can assume that the reader is familiar with them. What the reader requires is evidence of your ability to understand and apply the theory and learn from in order to support the development of your findings and/or ideas.
You must cite all sources on which you have relied, for example textbooks, journal articles, web pages etc. using the Harvard Bibliographic referencing system. If you do not cite all sources, then you may be accused of plagiarism, and that may endanger your success in passing the module. If you are in any doubt about how to reference your work, please obtain guidance from the library and/or your academic librarian(s) for this module.

You will also need to take the following into account when completing your assignment:
• Quality of executive summary (does it give a brief complete summary of your paper for an executive to read?)
• Establishment of relevant theory
• Allocation of credit and sources used (have I included references and citations to the material I have used?)
• Clarity of argument
• Overall report presentation including spelling and grammar
• Adherence to nominated word limit (+/- 10%)
• Word processed (letter size 12, times new roman, 1.5 space), fully referenced (Harvard Referencing System)
Assessed intended learning outcomes

Labor Relations

The President’s executive order on Labor Relations has open the opportunity to make adjustments to the Professional Tech Department and its employee unit. In keeping with the good faith negotiation approach stated by executive office, the Professional Tech Unit is willing to submit an offer to the labor union in effort to expedite the negotiation process on both sides so an agreement is reached relatively soon. Based on some general consensus the Professional Development Unit is interested in providing the following benefits in exchange for an improved accountability and streamlining Removal procedures from underperforming and highly liable-burdensome employees
Economic Item: Salaries may not increase beyond the rate of inflation
The Professional Tech Management Unit is pleased to announce that our fiscal budget has managed to secured pay raises for the Professional Tech department. Understanding that wages and compensation has been stagnant these past 8 years, a much-needed pay raise is in order and should be implemented within the next 3 years.
The total based on the budget adjustments provided by the city manager and the mayor, our department is capable of meeting the proposed salary increase by 2% for the first year, with an additional 1% raise for the following 2 consecutive years. This will be a pay raise total of 4% by the end of year 3. The transitional pay raise is intended to create a progressive adjustment to our departments budget in order to ensure that funds will be adequate in relation to our city’s budget and responsibilities, as well as forthcoming issues with our economy specially regarding the pandemic lock-down

Cost breakdown
Department’s Compensation annual cost $2,264,656
budget increased provided by city + $ 100,000
cost of 4% increase in 3 years $ 91,722
salary increased year 1 $ 45,293
salary increase year 2 $ 23,099
salary increase year 3 $ 23,330
new total compensation at yr3 $2,356,379

Non-economic item: Sick time/leave, how much workers are entitled to.
The Professional Tech Management Unit is also considering changes and adjustments to the sick time/leave and how much time are employees willing to negotiate. Some of the possible arrangements include comp time, flexible schedule, and telecommuting. If additional sick time leave is requested by the union, the cost associated with this will have to be included in the overall cost for the department which will impact the pay raises being proposed.

Streamlining Removal Procedures:
In exchange for the proposed benefits, the Professional Tech Management Unit is requesting for Union Members to provide a streamlining Removal Procedures that can be implemented by the City and department in order to address disgruntled and underperforming employees. Our department will review the procedures and provide revisions for your review prior to approving the final document.
