Ch 3 implementation # 2 strategies

Now, let’s ask a provocative question: How can you use this info to make your life better and achieve your own goals? Well, if you want a good grade, and thus you know you need to study, how can you use rewards and punishments to MOTIVATE you to study?

You need to apply the rewards and punishments to yourself.

Positive Reinforcement: Perhaps give yourself a treat when you study longer
Negative Reinforcement: Remove one chore around the house you dislike when you study longer
Positive Punishment: Give yourself an additional chore you dislike if you fail to study longer
Negative Punishment: Take away a treat if you fail to study longer
Since rewards and punishments are always influencing all of your behaviors anyway (see the “brushing teeth” example from above), why not use them to your advantage to achieve your goals. Take control of your life. Plus, learn more about the material for this week along the way.

Notice each R&P is based upon a behavior. If you achieve that behavior you get a reward (Positive Reinforcement or Negative Reinforcement). If you FAIL to achieve that behavior, you get a punishment (Positive Punishment or Negative Punishment).

Instructions for the Strategies Assignment

The “Implementation #2 Strategies” assignment involves picking a goal for this week, using an R&P strategy, and then reflecting upon the outcome.

Each week will be following the same format of Goal, Strategy, and Reflection.

Each of the steps is important and necessary. I am trying to teach you a new and formal way of “Implementing” concepts in your life, and thus having this new skill once the course is over.

Write your submission in the following way, with each item a separate PARAGRAPH (even if that paragraph is only one sentence) and using this labeling:

Goal: Start by stating your goal. You may pick any goal you wish. That goal is the “Behavior” you want to increase or decrease this week, such as exercise more, wake up earlier, spend more time with family, start a new hobby, finish a task you have been putting off for a while, start eating healthier food, and so forth. Your goal must be an actual “behavior”. This first part is typically only a sentence or two.
Strategy: Pick one of the Four Types of R&P. Then, explain what actions you implemented to use that strategy to accomplish your goal this week. For example, if you used Positive Reinforcement, which has the definition of “adding something valuable”, you need to explain how you added something, and how that thing is valuable to you. This second paragraph is typically short, but it can sometimes be medium length if your strategy is complicated.
Reflection: Explain the outcome of your experience. Did that R&P help you achieve your goal, or not? In other words, the previous “Strategy” portion is just explaining what you did, so that paragraph is typically short. Then, in this Reflection portion is where you explain what happened after you tried that strategy, such as the outcome, how you felt, what you experienced, and so forth.  And then most importantly, reflect upon the experience. The reflection is the most important part of this formal process because it provides awareness, and thus growth and improvement. As part of the reflection, you MUST explain how you could do the experience again in a way that would improve the experience for yourself.  (Reflection is so important I have a separate page about it in case you want more help with it or the assignment.)
As a quick summary, the first part is just a single sentence of your goal, the second part is a concise explanation of your actions, and the third part is a critical analysis of the outcome and reflection on how to do it again in the future.

Discussion Ch 3

nstructions – Brief version:

First, write your Submission: The instructions for this assignment are similar to the one last week (Understanding #1 Self Referent) except instead of reporting how a concept from the textbook explains your past (and thus helps you understand yourself), you are reporting how a concept from the textbook can be used to implement in your life in some way (and thus be “useful” as a strategy to achieve your goals in life). I would highly recommend skimming some examples since this activity is much easier to complete after you see some examples. The basic idea is that when reading the Chapter you paused after each paragraph to ask yourself how to turn that information into a concrete strategy to use in your life. You report one of those instances for the assignment. You don’t have to try the strategy, just brainstorm ideas for how you could use the info in your life. Your post should be two paragraphs:

Concept: The first paragraph is stating the concept or topic from the chapter. You may copy directly from the text. In fact, I encourage you to just copy/paste the textbook. This first paragraph is typically only a few sentences long.
Application: The second paragraph describes how that concept could become a concrete strategy. You must provide details. This second paragraph is medium length. The objective is to be articulate and concise. Longer paragraphs do not always mean better paragraphs. The goal is to use the keywords from the concept when explaining how it could be a concrete strategy in this second paragraph.
(FYI – you need to include the labels “Concept” and “Application” because they are thematic approach or strategy I am trying to help you practice so that when you read something you will naturally learn to ask yourself to concise identify topics and apply what you learned (identify & apply skills).

How to do it? After each paragraph, pause for a second or two, and ask yourself if you can turn that information into a concrete strategy to improve your life. The objective for this assignment is just to brainstorm ways of using the knowledge from the textbook to make your life easier, similar to how the Self-Referent effect was brainstorming ways in which the concepts applied to your life.

How to write my submission? There are two paragraphs:

Concept: The first paragraph is stating the concept from the textbook. You may copy directly from the text. In fact, I encourage you to just copy/paste the textbook. This first paragraph is typically only a few sentences long.
Application: The second paragraph describes how that concept can be turned into a concrete strategy to improve your life. You must provide details. This second paragraph is medium length. The objective is to be articulate and concise. Longer paragraphs do not always mean better paragraphs.

What is the goal of that second paragraph? Your goal is to use the keywords from the concept when explaining how it can be a strategy. For example, if you are using Affective Forecasting (page 6) then the important parts of that concept are the ideas of “expecting” certain “feelings” to occur in the future, so when writing your second paragraph you should explain how your strategy involves expectations, and feelings (see the examples page for examples). Try using the keywords from the concept when writing your second paragraph.

Are there formatting requirements? Yes, you MUST include the word “Concept:” as the label for the first paragraph, and “Application:” as the label for the second paragraph. Those labels are the thematic approach or strategy I am trying to help you practice. In other words, the objective of the assignment is to think in a new way, so that every time you read something you will naturally learn to ask yourself to identify the concept, and then to apply what you learned.

Business email

Business Email Individual Assignment

For this task, you will write a professional business email to a person in a higher position than you (upward communication).

You have (under very good terms) left your previous job. You have maintained a nice communication channel with your former boss via professional social media (linkedin.com) and exchanged several emails. It has been a year, youve had lunch together, finished another project, and the time has come for you to ask your former boss for a letter of recommendation for a new job. Draft an email requesting such. Remember, you want to refresh your boss on the things you did at the company without exhibiting hubris. Your former boss runs a very large department and travels often. Therefore, might not have all of your past details in his/her immediate proximity.  Some tips to follow are here: https://bit.ly/2SchgpS

The fine print: The email should not exceed one page in length; the text should follow standard formatting:  single-spaced, one-inch margins all around, block paragraphs, and 12 point Times New Roman or Calibri font. Carefully include the needed To and CC fields. Be sure to adhere to standard format for emails, including guidewords (From, Date, To, Subject) and block paragraphs (no indent, blank line between, single-space within).

The Chemically Impaired Co-worker Discussion

Karen is a skilled emergency department (ED) nurse in a hospital that treats many trauma victims. In her personal life, she is struggling with issues of grief and loneliness and feels like work is therapy because I can forget for a while. One day she accidentally took home a discarded opiate. Feeling tired and unable to sleep, so she self-administered the morphine just this once to provide relief and some much-needed sleep. She tells herself she will not do it again. A week later, Karen purposely takes home and self-inject another morphine. Within a short period of time, she is diverting on a regular basis and realizes she will experience withdrawal unless she injects regularly. Karen finds herself working extra shifts, volunteering to medicate co-workers patients who need pain medications and isolating from other staff members in order to procure and use the drugs. Fellow nurses in the ED recognize something is wrong, but knowing how highly charged the departments environment is, they assume its just stress. Karens supervisor, Ann, notices changes in Karens demeanor and behavior and decides to more closely monitor her practice. Ann also looks for medication irregularities or discrepancies, record falsifications, and any patterns of complaints by patients. The findings showed many narcotic discrepancies and patient pain complaints whenever Karen worked as their nurse.  Following the hospital procedure and investigating the situation, Ann questions Karen about her performance and behavior.

After reading the scenario, take some time to reflect on delegation, then answer substantively to the following questions.

Based on your knowledge of substance users, how would you expect Karen to initially respond?
How do you believe Karens manager should respond to Karens situation? Describe in detail.
Do you believe that Karen should be granted an option to return to work in the future?
Does treatment end for Karen after successfully completes the treatment program?
