Scientific Controversies

Please watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4nuWLd2ivc
Then create a timeline of the controversy in your post.
(It may be useful to use the Smart Art function in Microsoft PowerPoint (click on the insert tab, SmartArt, Process, and choose a template that resembles a timeline. After the timeline is complete, click on save as and change the file type to an image format, such as JPEG, and save the slide.)
For some activities in your timeline, you may find it necessary to look online for the year (or decade is fine) when something specific was discovered or something happened.
Include the following in the timeline. Note that listing the decade rather than year is acceptable.
Before it was a controversy, what was the conclusion accepted by scientists? In the timeline just label it as before [year/decade]
When did this become a controversy? In a few words, name why it became a controversy (e.g., scientists completed a new investigation; scientists proposed a new way of looking at the phenomenon).
Include a series of blocks on the timeline for the development of various evidence. Briefly describe the evidence and which side of the controversy it corresponds.
Note that most of these videos primarily describe just one side of the controversy. Do some research to find evidence for the other side.
Cite your sources
When was there consensus among scientists regarding the controversy? Briefly explain the consensus and why scientists came to a consensus.

Part 1

Empathy

In this week’s readings, the authors discuss emotional intelligence, a concept which measures people’s ability to understand emotions and express them appropriately. As you have learned, this ability is crucial to communicating effectively in interpersonal relationships. One of the major components of emotional intelligence is the ability to empathize with others.

Bevan, J. L., & Sole, K. (2014). Making connections: Understanding interpersonal communication(2nd ed.). San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc.

    • Read the writing prompt below in its entirety. Notice that there are three tasks:

      1. Based on what you’ve learned in Chapter 8, start formulating a definition of empathy and consider why it is important in effective communication.

      2. Brainstorm some examples of times when you had difficulties empathizing with others.

      3. Think of some ways you could have handled the situation differently.

    • Review the grading rubric.

Reflect: Take time to reflect on why empathy is so important in becoming better communicators. Consider how we might become more empathetic.Write: Based on the information in Chapter 8 in the text:

    • Define empathy and explain why it is important for effective communication.

    • Share an example of a time when you found it difficult to empathize with someone. How did you handle the situation?

    • What could you have done differently to empathize with them? Consider what you’ve learned in class this week.

Thoroughly address all three elements of this prompt by writing at least two to three sentences on each element. Use the course readings at least once to help you make your points. Consider copying and pasting these tasks into a word file and addressing each of them separately.

Your initial response should be 200-300 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3.Respond to Peers: Review your classmates’ posts and try to find some common ground or expand on the students’ ideas. Use the text to expand on everyone’s understanding of the importance of empathy in communication. Ask questions that will enhance both of your understanding of the key concepts. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. Response posts must be 125 to 200 words in length. If you have questions about how to participate in discussions, consult “About Discussions” under the Course Home menu.

Part 2

Willingness to Listen

To be an effective communicator we must master the core competence of listening. A willingness to listen during an interaction allows you to understand others, respond appropriately to what they say, or provide helpful feedback.Prepare: As you prepare to write this discussion post, take a few moments to do the following:

    • Read the writing prompt below in its entirety. Notice that there are three tasks:

      1. Complete the following listening survey and record your results: How Good a Listener Are You?  http://www.newlineideas.com/listening-skills-quiz.html

*Please note: though it asks if you want to sign up for their service, you are not required to do so.

      2. Think about how your listening style shapes your professional relationships.

      3. Make a list of some specific techniques from the Bevan and Sole (2014) you can use to improve your listening.

    • Re-read Section 7.2: Listening.

    • Review the grading rubric.

Reflect: Take time to reflect on why listening is so important in becoming better communicators. Consider how the listening techniques covered in the course text could improve your professional relationships.Write: Based on your quiz results and what you learned in Section 7.2 of the text:

    • What is your willingness to listen score? What feedback did you receive from the quiz? Why do you think this measure was an accurate or inaccurate representation of your willingness to listen?

    • How do you think your willingness to listen score could impact your professional relationships?

    • How can you improve your listening? Explain some specific techniques described in our text and how improvement in these areas could enhance your professional relationships. Consider what you’ve learned in class this week.

Thoroughly address all three elements of this prompt by writing at least two to three sentences on each element. Use the course readings at least once to help you make your points. Consider copying and pasting these tasks into a word file and addressing each of them separately.
