Bachelor of Nursing

 use QUT APA referencing for citing academic literature

 be submitted in electronic format as a PDF document via Turnitin.

Task description: For this assignment, you will need to reflect on your values, beliefs, opinions and learnings about mental health and illness. Begin from the position of recognising your understandings about mental health and illness prior to beginning this unit and then reflecting on which views, beliefs and opinions have changed (or not) over the past five weeks. This requires a level of self-awareness and is designed to further increase your self-awareness. Describe what you have learned about yourself, others, and society generally. To help guide your thoughts for this task, you are encouraged to write a weekly journal reflecting on the weekly readings, lectures and tutorial experiences. This journal is not for submission but is likely to help you to engage in the process of reflection and ultimately, to write this assignment. While this assignment is about YOU and your experiences/beliefs/values/opinions, you still need to refer to the literature to support some of your ideas. This demonstrates that you have thought more deeply and critically about this reflection.

Background

In each part, markers will be looking for: indications of your insight and self-awareness; connections between your personal experience and the unit content; your ability to apply reflective practice to clinical practice; indications that progress has been made towards achieving the learning objectives.

What you need to do: 1 Read the Criterion Reference Assessment guide for this task. This will help you to understand what is required of you and how this assignment will be graded.

2 Refer to the 5Rs Reflection Framework to

understand how to frame your process of reflection.

3 Make reference to and integrate required unit readings to help you make deeper meanings from your reactions and insights.

4 Write an Introduction for your essay (100 words +/-

10%) The introduction should provide a synopsis of what you have written, not an outline of the assignment question. 5 Write a body for your essay (800 words +/- 10%)

NSB204 Mental Health: Self and others

Bachelor of Nursing

The body of your essay should include

 what you know and believe about mental health and illness. Include a discussion of what supports your own mental wellbeing.

 how your beliefs, attitudes and opinions about mental health and illness have formed. Factors to consider include your own experience of mental health issues or that of someone you know; your knowledge base (including how the media contributes to your understandings); your culture (age, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, class, ability/disability).

 reflection on what you are learning in the unit’s lectures and tutorials, considering how these materials align with your existing knowledge, opinions and thinking about mental health and illness. Describe in particular, any emotional responses you have experienced in relation to the learning materials so far.

 how you will integrate your new understandings of mental health and illness into your nursing practice. Consider the person-centred/recovery- oriented approach to care and the therapeutic use of self. Consider what you might find challenging or difficult. Also consider your strengths and therefore, what you might do well.

6 Write a Conclusion for your essay (100 words +/- 10%)

The conclusion should provide a synopsis of your assignment and declare key ideas and learnings, particularly about how your learnings will shape your future nursing practice.

Resources needed to complete the task:

 Week 1-5 readings, lectures and tutorials on the BB site for NSB204.

 The 5Rs Reflection Framework

 Learning through reflection web site.

 QUT Cite|Write APA guide.

 Turnitin Tip Sheets.
