In Unit VIII of this course, you will complete a research paper where you create a balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows for your healthcare facility. You will also make capital budgeting and investment decisions, and present long-term financial analysis for the facility. In this analysis, you will evaluate the financial implications of current and future healthcare trends and discuss the future of healthcare financial management in the United States.
In this unit, your assignment is to submit a research paper topic that gives basic background information about your healthcare facility and presents current budget information. The first part of this assignment is to decide which facility that you wish to analyze. Do not use the same facility you used in the Unit V Assignment. Create your own facility name, background, and information about what type of healthcare facility it is. Give a brief description of your facility, including information about its history, its current financial situation, and whether it is for-profit or nonprofit.
Part two of the assignment for this unit is to outline the budget information for your facility for 2018. Include the revenues, costs, and profits (or losses). With this information, present a budget and actual results for the facility with the difference in dollar-terms and percentages based on the actual numbers. Explain the relationships of these. Based on this information, calculate and interpret the revenue, cost, and profit variances for the facility. You are creating this facility, so the budget information is up to you. For instance, if you want to concentrate on turning operations around in a struggling facility, that facility might face losses in its 2018 budget.
Part three of the assignment for this unit is to research the topics listed at the top of this assignment for the final research paper, list three of the five sources that you will use in your research paper, and give a brief description (e.g., two or three sentences) of each source. At least two of these must come from the CSU Online Library.
Your completed research paper topic should be a minimum of two pages in length.

The Beauchamp et al. (2015) article contained many flaws. After briefly identifying the social problem and the purpose for their study, the authors did not adequately discuss prior studies or identify the gap they found in the literature to provide justification for their study. They also did not discuss what theories they were using to base their assumption on that systematic desensitization and implosion therapy would be more successful than the other therapies. Likewise, I could not find the research question or the hypothesis which would help the reader understand more of the exact perimeters and variables the authors considered. One of the tips from the Five Strategies for Critical Reading is to trust your questions (WU Writing Center, 2014). When I initially read the Beauchamp et al. (2015) article, I had several questions concerning the methodology. A strong research paper has a solid methodology (Galvan & Galvan, 2015). I felt the methodology had ethical concerns and I questioned the instrument they decided to use as well as the use of interns to deliver the therapy treatments. The discussion did not offer any new insights as to why implosion therapy showed more favorable results.
The McGillivray et al. (2015) article was more comprehensive and addressed all the Stadtlander (2018) recommendations for what students should focus on when evaluating articles for a literature review. Stadtlander (2018) recommends that the following components are adequately addressed in the journal article one considers for their literature review: the article states the social problem, the identified research gap, any theories the authors used, the research question and hypothesis, the research variables, measures, the method, and population being studied (p.88). I especially thought the authors did a great job differentiating initial curiosity and post-answer interest. They also included confidence ratings and judgement of learning as variables to consider. They also addressed group differences in their results. Overall, this study provided enough information to answer all of the research questions. Additionally, their discussion offered insight regarding the results.

Journal: You are to keep, in a journal, a detailed outline and analysis of all reading assignments. Your journal will have one entry per week. Each weekly entry should have, as a heading, your name, the name of the class, the date, and a bibliographic citation (Turabian format) for the assigned book, noting the pages read that week. This should be followed with a detailed outline (standard outline format: I, A, B, 1, 2, a, b, etc.) of that week’s reading assignment. The outline should then be followed by your own original, brilliant analysis (analysis, not a mere summary, not merely your opinion, and not your “feelings”) of the week’s reading assignment. Your analysis should be between 200-300 words. I expect your outline plus analysis to be at least ten (10) pages per week.
For instance, if we read a particular book in two weeks, then the journal you submit when we finish the book will have two weekly entries, with each weekly entry consisting of a bibliographic entry of that week’s assigned reading, a detailed outline, and 200-300 words of analysis. Journals will be collected on the dates specified in the schedule below.
