Your textbook has an entire chapter devoted to literacy narratives, Chapter 10. I suggest you read the first paragraph on page 75 to get a better idea of how “literacy” is loosely defined. The chapter includes one sample essay concerning how a young woman became “literate” in the language and art of car mechanics while another student writes about his introduction to classical music. I suppose both could be loosely construed as “literacy” narratives in that both are about realizing they wanted or needed to learn something. So when you approach this assignment, do not limit yourself to “texts,” but think more in terms of learning.
Here are the directions for writing Essay #1:
A narrative is a story about your experience. Literacy narratives feature good storytelling, vivid detail and description. They often include dialogue and always contain elements of reflection in which the story’s meaning is disclosed. For this literacy narrative, you could think of a book or other text (film, television show, song, comic book, or painting) that has been significant to you in some way. Or, you could think about “literacy” in broader terms. For example, there is such a thing as “cultural” literacy in which we learn about and come to understand different cultures. You can also approach this in a broader sense, and write about situations where you had to learn something. If you have questions about the appropriateness of your text, do not hesitate to ask me.
You may use personal pronouns such as “I,” “We,” and “You” and derivations. You’ll be speaking from your personal point of view.
Most importantly, do not “tell” your readers what to think; instead “show” us what you mean. You can accomplish this through the use of vivid language, by setting “scenes” and recreating dialogue.
Must be a minimum of 750 words of content; the heading, title of your essay does not count in the 750 word minimum word count.
Must be in Times New Roman 12 point font
Must be typed in MLA 8 format
In this module, you will use these directions for this essay for your pre-writing activity and for the thesis discussion.
