Question 1: Let’s look more deeply at Constructivist Theory (CT). CT has been eagerly advanced by those who find deficiencies in Realism, Liberalism and the “Neo-Neos. However, when stripped to its core, it is not a theory – rather it is a series of approaches, an ontology based on assumptions about global politics, human agency, norms, identity and social interactions. In contrast to realists and neoliberals, who usually tend to take state interests as a given or focus on variables of power such as military assets or high GDP counts, CT is interested in exploring how state actors define their various national interests, threats to those interests and how they relate to one another. It challenges rationalism by creating constructivist alternatives to other traditional IR theories .
