Concepts from the theory, such as defense mechanisms, transference, and countertransference, are also used by most nonpsychoanalytic counselors to supplement their work with clients.
Alexander Street Press has produced a video series titled Five Forces of Counseling and Psychotherapy. The series includes interviews with experts on the following five counseling theories: psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic-existential, multicultural, and social justice. Each interview is followed by one counseling session illustrating the theory’s approach. The same client, Annie, is featured across sessions so that viewers can appreciate the difference in how each theory would approach the same problems. Throughout this course, you will watch videos from this series and other videos that highlight the theories discussed in each module.

In a minimum of 300 words, post your responses to the following: Discuss one preconceived notion you had about psychoanalysis and whether it was supported by the experts’ description of the approach. Explain why.Discuss the experts’ opinion on whether psychoanalysis can be applied across cultures. What do you think?
