Select one country and assess its population pyramids for this year, and 20 years before and after. Take screenshots of the pyramids to include in your essay. Use those pyramids to assess and reflect on “Population pyramids: Powerful predictors of the future” regarding changes and shifts in your country’s population and the potential for overpopulation. Consider which stage of the demographic transition your country is in. Additionally, you are also required one outside source that addresses birth rate, death rate, life expectancy or migration rate for your selected country.

For this exercise, you will choose one of the psychological experiments listed at the bottom of these instructions. These are experiments that have already been conducted and published. Several are “classic” experiments in social psychology of which you should already be aware. You will read the published information carefully and then you will take the knowledge gleaned from the readings to complete the IRB application AS IF you were the Principal Investigator applying for approval to conduct the study.
For some of the questions included on the application, you may need to “stretch” your knowledge a bit. For example, the published information may say that college students were given extra credit for participation, but may not go into a lot of detail regarding the process used to recruit those students. In such a situation, you may need to use your imagination to fill in some blanks.
In addition, please remember that the goal here is to put yourself in the principal investigator’s shoes at the time that he/she conducted the experiment. If the experiment was conducted in the 1970s, for example, remember that the standards for human experimentation were different back then. Answer the questions as the investigator WOULD have answered them (based upon what you read about the experiment), not as they SHOULD have answered them based upon today’s ethical standards.

Are judges given too much discretion when it comes to sentencing?
Judicial discretion refers to making a judgment or decision without a fixed rule. The discretion allows the judge to make a determination on what is fair and just under the circumstances. Do they have too much discretion? It is both yes and no. The goal of judicial discretion is to promote a fair and due process and to ensure that defendants facing exigent circumstances can have a fair chance, a fair sentence, and to have their case individually tried and not be subject to being grouped into a category.  It allows the judge to consider the defendant’s circumstances and make an independent decision on his/her fate. The No part of the response refers to the fact that it can be abused and used unconstitutionally. A judge has room to be bias and bring their personal feelings in to the case as well. There may be inconsistencies amongst judges in different states. When there is wiggle room in judicial proceedings, discretion can create a negative or positive impact for a defendant. Discretion is good when a law has a gray area. (Zonay, 2015).
What are some of the factors a judge looks at when determining an appropriate sentence? A judge considers the following factors when sentencing: does the punishment fit the crime and the offender.  (LSTD400 | Lesson 7, APU). When sentencing, the judge will also look at the length of the sentence (minimum or maximum sentence), criminal past, involvement in the crime, the mental state of the defendant at the time of the crime, the outcome of the victim, etc. (Nolo, n.d).
