Title

The Civil War was a fight between the North and
South, which started from 1861 till the end of 1865. The American Civil War was
one of the devastating event in history, which caused about 700,000 lives. The
war was thought to help shape the way American individuals today. The South saw
this war as a “War of Rebellion†or as a “War for South Freedom†but for the
northern side of view, the civil war was a revolution. There are many causes
that play a huge role in the Civil War but most historians believe that slavery
was the main reason of the war. The other factors that need to be considered
are social, economic, and political. There were a few hidden psychological and
social factors that served as a speed up for momentous event in the United
States. The Civil War was taken place during the first century of the
Confederation and people still did not realize that they were part of the
Union. Towards Confederation, there was sense of nationalism; people liked the
problems in their own states.
By 1787, slavery has been gone from the North, but
slavery was present in the South till the revolutionary period. The
Constitution and the Union were based on the principles of freedom, liberty,
and that all men were created equal. It’s good to know that slavery became a
major cause, which was not resolved by the American government. Revolutionaries
wanted to have liberty all for themselves and they didn’t care about the issue
of independence for the black community. This is one reason that historians
believe that revolutionaries were pro-slavery. Slavery was a primary cause and
where hatred for whites reigned supreme. After the Revolution of 1776, the
hatred increased and that’s when America gained independence from the British. The
revolutionary didn’t care about the cause of the slaves caused a lot of spark
towards the whites and the Confederation. Questions of slavery arise only when
the Constitution was being framed.
The second most important role was state rights
even though slavery was a important cause in the Civil War. The Confederation
was created with the 13 colonies and it formed a central government. All of the
13 colonies would get the same amount of representation in the Congress. In the
central government is allowed to hamper all of the important matters without being
questioned. States were approved of limited powers but later they were able to
recover some control over the internal affairs. About half of the population
was slaving in the South during the year 1800. A few years later, thousands of
people went to the North because they had better work opportunities. America
has soon became a center of attraction for the poor and a lot of them left
their countries to find better jobs in United States.
In the Northern states, majority of the immigrants
stayed while the South was mostly an agrarian society. In the Congress, the
South was left with very low representation and if this continued, South would
lose its importance. In the North, a lot of people were being attracted because
of the growth in its industries, while in the South it was left behind and was
mostly on agriculture. The North contained lots of well educated people while
South contained mostly slavery.
In the North, there was balance of power, which was
against the institution of slavery. The Civil war did not only have a fight
between the whites and blacks but it was a more struggle between the North and
the South. North believed in human rights and wanted to get rid of slavery.
South was angry at the Northern states and South was losing their power; the
war became inevitable.
The Civil war will be remembered and therefore its
important to study the conflict between the South and North. Another important
cause of the Civil war was the economy
in the South. The South’s source of income was farm and plantation;
before the industrial age, South was strong and the economy was going well.
People from all parts of world came to the Northern states because their
industrialized economy was growing rapidly. South needed a steady growth
becasue they had lots of slaves and had to be provided with food and shelter.
Everyone has to understand that there were several political, social, and
economic issues, which gave a rise to the Civil war.
After knowing all of the causes of the Civil war,
the one that felt the most important cause was slavery. The reason it is an
important cause because that’s what separated South from the North. In today’s
society we still see Civil war as a conflict between South and North. These two
sides were divided due to slavery and every economic, political, and social
reason simply accrue from one basic cause. Some still feel that slavery could
have been taken away without war. The Civil War was inevitable and the South
was so stubborn to protect slavery that the conflict turned into a huge violent
where thousands of people lose their lives because of this.

case study research paper 2

This semester we are exploring the ethical foundations for integral social and economic development, with particular attention to its sources in the Catholic Church’s social doctrine and foundational philosophy. Applying these insights to debated cases in development policy from recent history or the present day is not only an essential goal for this course, but also a hopeful goal for your continuing professional formation. Understanding the varied interests and contexts that brought you to this course, this project intends to provide you the opportunity to explore salient facts and arguments surrounding an important issue in contemporary society that requires ethical evaluation. You are then invited to experiment in public discourse on your chosen topic in collaboration with classmates through a multimedia presentation. The goal of such efforts is a solid grounding in responsible and incisive participation in social, moral discourse that allows you to add “more light than heat” to argument.

1. Individual research proposals for the evaluative paper within your topic ought to be neither so broad as to be unresolvable within the parameters of the assignment (e.g. ethics of free markets in the globalized world), nor irrelevant in today’s society (e.g. “Whether the Comintern, or the Third International, was successful in promoting income equality in areas of its activities.”). Topics can either investigate the ethics of a particular policy or exemplary case in recent history or can look at a specific component or aspect of a larger topic in development ethics. Since each of you has a unique set of experiences informing your program of study, I ask that you aim to have a unique topic and thesis on which no one else is working in class. The instructor is available to help with the specification of your topic and construction of a convincing thesis statement, as well as point out possible sources for research. Your topic, thesis, and working bibliography of at least 5 sources are due in an email to ______ no later than the start of class

Some models for the kind of case studies you could pursue are:

Faith Mkwananzi & Merridy Wilson-Strydom (2018) “Multidimensional disadvantages and educational aspirations of marginalised migrant youth: insights from the Global South,” Journal of Global Ethics, 14:1, 71-94, DOI: 10.1080/17449626.2018.1496349.

John Cameron, Hemant Ojha, (2007) “A deliberative ethic for development: A Nepalese journey from Bourdieu through Kant to Dewey and Habermas”, International Journal of Social Economics, Vol. 34 Issue: 1/2, pp.66-87, https://doi.org/10.1108/03068290710723372.

2. When drafting your paper, you must accomplish the following tasks:

  • Briefly present the relevant historical, social, and political circumstances out of which this development challenge arose. Explain why it is a topic of disagreement regarding policy responses to it and what the primary arguments of two or more positions are. Be sure to provide significant empirical research and facts, citing the sources for these data.
  • Using sources from the course and your own research, evaluate the policy positions offered in Section A from the perspective of integral human development. Craft an ethical argument for the policies using philosophers, the Catholic Church’s social tradition (e.g. encyclicals), and representative economists who adhere to the integral framework. Feel free to include other relevant sources from your own cultural and religious backgrounds that support the integral approach. Explain which teachings are most relevant and how they apply to this case or issue. Cite from at least one documentary source of Catholic social doctrine (e.g. www.vatican.va, www.usccb.org) and at least two (2) philosophers (e.g. Averroes, John Locke, Jacques Maritain; use journals like the Journal of Global Ethics: https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rjge20/current).
  • Present at least one alternative ethical framework for evaluating the policy proposals in Section A that either directly critique the integral approach in Section B and/or represent an alternative foundational position. Note the points of agreement and disagreement between these and the integral approach, explaining why their conclusions differ with respect to this issue. Cite at least two (2) critical authorities.
  • Critically analyze all the positions presented in Sections B and C, assessing their strong and weak points. Present your personal position on the issue at hand, constructively building a well-reasoned and convincing argument for this commitment. Note questions for further investigation and evidence that might clarify the social and economic issue in development and help to resolve the ethical conflict therein.

Papers should respect the following guidelines:

  • No fewer than 4500 words (approximately 15 pages) in length, type-written, free from all typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors.
  • Double line spacing, 12 pt. Times New Roman (or equivalent) font with page numbers at the bottom of the page.
  • All paraphrasing, quotations, or other citation must be noted parenthetically or in a footnote according to a standard academic style guide (e.g. APA, Harvard [author-date]).
  • On Friday, November____, you must submit a draft of your paper to the professor by email for review and comments. This must be at least half of your projected final draft with an outline for all sections yet to be completed. You will receive feedback with recommendations to integrate into your paper.
  • All submissions must be made by email no later than Monday. No late submissions will be accepted, which may result in failure of the course. If you have any concern or anticipated conflict, please contact the professor as soon as possible.

This is a complex exercise in research, reasoning, and writing that I hope is worthwhile. Be sure to work ahead and make use of the instructor, peers, and the Writing Center (http://english.cua.edu/wc/) for review, advice and aid in editing.Find a topic about which you are passionate and engage it deeply. Enjoy “owning” your research and conclusions. Please e-mail me or call with any questions or concerns.

4. Following the completion of the draft of your individual research papers, you are asked to share the fruits of your research and case study in a 15-20 minute presentation to the class during the last two weeks of the course. You should have A/V support (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi) and/or handouts with a summary of your argument, important data, key quotations, and important conclusions. Offer some questions for discussion and invite collaboration with your peers to hone insightful recommendations to your project that may be included in your final draft due Monday, December 10th.

Please be in touch by email or in office hours with any questions or concerns. Best wishes and may this be a fruitful, rewarding exercise.
