Discussion: Role of Stakeholder Engagement
As assessed in Week 3, a SWOT analysis can provide a variety of complex applications to the world of business strategic planning. From this examination, there are further revelations in connecting a SWOT analysis to stakeholder communication and engagement. With a comprehensive understanding of an organizations existing relationship with stakeholders, strategic planning can facilitate effective decision making to benefit all involved parties.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the strategy practice case you analyzed in the Week 3 Discussion, Getting the Most Out of a SWOT Analysis, and the Mapping Stakeholder Influence figure provided on page 235 of Dyer, Godfrey, Jensen, and Bryce (2018). Be sure to also review the video Effecting Change Through Active Engagement With Stakeholders, provided in the weeks Required Media. Consider how you can leverage communication strategies to motivate the different stakeholder groups to engage in strategic change within an organization.

By Day 3
Post an analysis of the role of stakeholder engagement in strategic planning. Your analysis should include the following:

A brief description of your chosen case, including context such as industry and stakeholder groups
An analysis of one stakeholder group that you feel is more valuable in engaging toward the strategic plan. Be sure to answer the following with supportive examples:
How does this stakeholder group impact the business?
What motivates this stakeholder group to engage with the organization, and why is this motivation valuable for strategic planning?
A detailed explanation of communication strategies that could engage this group of stakeholders effectively. Provide a rationale and supportive examples of how these strategies will engage and motivate change with the chosen stakeholder group.
Be sure to support your work with a minimum of two specific citations from this weeks Learning Resources and at least one additional scholarly source.

Refer to the Week 5 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work.

Read a selection of your colleagues postings.

By Day 5
Respond to at least two of your colleagues postings in one or more of the following ways:

Compare your initial posting with that of your colleague, including insights on communication plans for stakeholder engagement.
In what ways do you agree or disagree with your colleague on the value of the identified stakeholder group, and how can this enhance or expand on your own choice of communication strategies?
Provide a suggestion for an additional stakeholder group to better support your colleagues posting, including a rationale for your suggestion.
Please note that, for each response, you must include a minimum of one appropriately cited scholarly reference.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what insights you gained as a result of reading the comments your colleagues made.

Discussion 1: Psychodynamic Theories in Social Work Practice

When was the last time you heard a baby cry? What causes did you attribute to the baby’s behavior? Was it time for a feeding or a diaper change? Maybe the baby just desired some human contact. No matter the cause, you likely recognized the baby’s attempt to communicate a basic human need. As that baby matures, strategies for communicating these needs will evolve, based on past experiences. If those experiences are negative, the individual will adapt, causing a change in how he or she relates to others and attempts to fulfill these basic needs in the future. However, those behavioral changes might not work to fulfill the complex needs that occur later in life. What effect might these behavioral changes have on future relationships and the individual’s ability to attain basic human needs in adulthood? Psychodynamic theory encompasses several theories that focus on how individuals behave as a result of internal developmental and external social conflicts. Those conflicts arise as a result of attempting to balance the needs, drives, and emotions that motivate human behavior. How might understanding adaptations in behavior, as well as the internal and external forces contributing to your clients’ concerns and their behavior, assist you in working with your clients? How might these psychodynamic theories be consistent with social work ethics and values in practice?

For this Discussion , review this week’s resources. Think about how experiences in infancy might affect future relationships and social/emotional functioning, as described by the psychodynamic theories discussed. Then, consider whether you find these theories consistent with social work ethics and values.

·       Post an explanation of how experiences in infancy might affect future relationships and social/emotional functioning as described by psychodynamic theories.

·       Then, explain whether you find these theories consistent with social work ethics and values, why or why not.

Discussion 2: Treating Sleep Disorders

During the course of treatment, a client stated that he has been unable to sleep successfully for the past year. His psychiatrist prescribed the sleep aid zolpidem. Because of the medication, he was immediately able to sleep. However, after 1 month of treatment, the client discovered euphoric episodes that occur if he resists falling asleep. The episodes induced waves of positive emotions and hallucinations, which he described as feeling “trippy.” The mental health professional recognized that the client is abusing the sleep aid. How should the mental health professional address this issue? How will this affect his current treatment plan?

For this Discussion,

Choose one of the following controversies involving special client populations and take a position:

o   Psychiatrists prescribing a potentially addictive sleep aid to adolescents

o   Psychiatrists prescribing sleep aids to clients in recovery from substance abuse

o   Psychiatrists prescribing sleep aids for conditions where the primary symptom is not insomnia

Then, conduct an Internet search or a Walden Library search for at least two peer-reviewed articles to support your position of your selected controversy.

Post an explanation of the controversy you selected. Formulate a position on the topic and support your stance with the peer-reviewed articles you found in your search.

Media and Film Studies

I.  PAPER TOPIC

As the culminating written project for this semester, this paper assignment requires you to select media theories that interest you most and apply them to media texts of your choosing.  You may conduct your study in one of two ways:

1. Select one media text and then analyze it using three of the media theories and/or theorists we have discussed in this course.

            or

2.  Use one media theory or theorist we have discussed in this course, and then select three media texts to analyze.

Your theory selections must incorporate only the readings assigned in this class, including the Optional readings (please do not use theories that we have not discussed).

For a media text, you must choose a feature-length film or a television series that has aired to mass audiences.  A short film or single web video will not suffice.  For a television series, one episode alone will likely not offer enough material.  However, rather than analyzing an entire series, a sampling of episodes will be adequate.  As a guideline, at least three episodes in a TV series could qualify as one text for this assignment.

As an example of approach #1, you might choose one film and examine it from the perspective of auteur study, genre study, and cultural study.  Or select a TV series and look at it from the perspective of multiple media effects theories.  Or choose cultural studies, humor theory, and montage theory.

As an example of approach #2, you may choose to study three films from the same director and approach them using an auteur study; or select three films and examine them using genre study.  Or choose one film and two TV series, etc.

NOTE: your texts may include documentary and other nonfiction media as well as fictional media.

It is very important to discuss your ideas and progress with Dr. Champion.

II.  TECHNICAL GUIDELINES

These guidelines are similar to Paper #1.

Your paper will need to contain a clear thesis statement in the opening paragraph.  You are basically asking a question or telling your reader what you want to explore in your paper.

Your opening should be followed by a brief literature review which summarizes the key theories you plan to address in your analysis.

The main body of your paper should stay focused on your thesis and use examples to illustrate your points.  This section will likely be the bulk of your paper.  You can assume your reader has not seen the films or TV shows, so use great detail in your descriptions.

To conclude your paper, you may briefly reiterate your thesis, but avoid being too repetitive.  Your conclusion is not meant to be a summary of your paper.  Instead, add your personal insights or opinions that you have gained through your analysis.

Papers should be between 2000 to 2500 words, which roughly works out to be between 6 and 8 full pages, with standard margins, 12-point font, double-spaced.

Use MLA style for all citations.  See examples on the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) website.  All ideas and quotes that are not your own must be attributed properly.

SEE ATTACHED WR RUBRIC AND GRADING SHEET FOR MORE GUIDELINES ON HOW YOUR PAPER WILL BE ASSESSED.

All papers must be submitted via Turnitin on Moodle by May 18th at 12:00 pm.

Students will briefly discuss their major thesis and conclusions with the class.
