1. What are the responsibilities of fire protection professionals relative to the needs of occupants with disabilities?

2. What are the responsibilities of fire protection professionals relative to the requirements of the fire service?

In everyday life we see the requirements of the fire protection professionals. Usually we don’t realize what we are looking at but the new codes from the NFPA and APA have changed. Have you ever looked at the Exit signs in a mall, or a safe area at the top of a stair well in the hospital and wondered why there are there?

The reason for the different changes is the responsibility of the protection professionals that are building the new construction in our areas. They have been told that these signage and safe area’s have saved lives during fires. They a partially correct, the other factor is where the people are in the building when an incident occurs. There are many new requirements that have come out in the last few years for safety. They do not just classify for people with disabilities.

As for these professional when it comes to the fire service, the changes have not really been visible to the public. In the fire service the changes to our Gear and Air packs are just two that have come to mind. New tempter levels have allowed us to get to that victim that is in the back room of the house. Or the updates to our mask for our air packs. There are new ones that have thermal imaging built in. These are cool because we can see the tempters levels out in front of us.

Fire protection professionals are on their game. They are staying In front of the changes that come to them. They take everything very seriously and want to work with people.

I have finally got my kids to nap this afternoon and hopefully I can get ahead for this week’s assignments. I hope everybody is having a good week and I cannot wait until next week because it’s CHRISTMAS! Furthermore, I decided to answer what are the responsibilities of fire protection professionals relative to the needs of occupants with disabilities. With that being said I think every fire district has a person or people that have a disability. With this disability it is the fire departments responsibility to know what kind of disability it may be just in case there is an emergency at that resident. It is also important to figure out if they have properly working smoke alarms and an egress to get out in moment’s notice.  Also, I think each fire professional has a duty which is to ensure everybody is safe and if called upon that firefighter is ready. This can be from installing smoke detectors in a disable person’s home to fighting many fires throughout their career. Each person a fire professional comes in contact with always has an impact and changes that person’s life.  Lastly, ensuring that people with disabilities has the same protection and access like a normal person should be the goal of the fire department when dealing with fire safety. Keeping everybody safe and update to date with fire protection safety is a much in today’s world.  I hope everybody has good week and I look forward to reading people forums this week.

In this situation, I would begin assessing overall project progression, resource, and personnel allocation, and re-evaluating the project budget to compensate for last-minute changes to the timeline of individual events. It is extremely important to grasp a full picture of the projects’ current status, and where resources and personnel should be focused to support successful project completion. There are many moving parts to the expansion of the business and its service extension, therefore some portions of the project will be forced to change entirely. The scope of the project is immediately transformed due to the alteration or replacement for budget, personnel, equipment, expedited building fees, and other associated costs that contribute to the increased budget that accompanies the change to the project timeline and execution.

A project manager must realize how to quicken a schedule to make up for unexpected occasions that postpone critical exercises or to suit changes in the project’s culmination date. Packing or slamming the schedule are terms used to depict the different procedures used to abbreviate the project schedule. Project managers use a few strategies to keep projects on schedule. Your textbook points to many similarities and many differences between OBM and OD. The text also highlights potential areas for collaboration. Throughout your future careers in Applied Behavior Analysis, you will often have to collaborate with others from other disciplines. This will require an understanding of other fields as well as the skills to determine where you can collaborate and create the most effective treatment environment for clients.

For this week’s Discussion you will compare and contrast OBM and OD as well as extend some of the points from this week’s Reading to your future practice:

1.           Identify and explain two key ways in which Organizational Behavior Management and Organizational Development are different.

2.           Describe one of the areas you feel OBM can contribute the most to in the field of OD and why.

3.           Discuss what is meant by “humble behaviorism,” as referenced in your textbook from Nuernger (1991).

4.           Discuss how the ideas of reciprocation and “humble behaviorism,” will impact collaboration with other disciplines in your future career in behavior analysis.

 

Student 1’s answer

Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and Organizational Development (OD) differ on the basic philosophy from which they are built upon. OBM relies on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Skinner’s operant conditioning while OD is based on humanistic philosophy and applied social psychology (Redmon, 2001). OBM targets problem solving at any level (direct service) while OD is a top-down approach which requires the participation of senior level staff (Redmon, 2001).

 

OBM can contribute to OD by its focus on outcomes instead of the process oriented focus that OD tends to utilize and by determining critical skills that make effective intervention and providing data for evaluating the monetary impact of the intervention (Redmon, 2001).

 

Humble behaviorism was introduced by Neuringer to express the importance of collaborating with other disciplines and avoiding the “I’m right – you’re wrong” attitude (Redmon, 2001).  He encouraged those in ABA to consider alternatives and to remember that all knowledge is subject to change in order to emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive image for ABA professionals (Redmon, 2001).  This is an extremely important concept to embrace when working in a field that has multidisciplinary treatment teams most of the time.  In order to have a cohesive and respectful working relationship with other professionals, one must remember that other have the right to disagree with your perspective or professional opinion.

 

This was never more evident for me than when working on a team where the parent had brought in a private Greenspan / DIR consultant to collaborate with the team, which functioned as an ABA team.  The two philosophies could not be more different!  But we respected each other and somehow came to successful agreements about treatment throughout the year.  I found that the most important thing or me to do (other than remain professional) was to stick with empirical data to prove any argument and avoid opinion.  I also welcomed her feedback and embraced her many years of experience because she was extremely knowledgeable about many things concerning autism.

Student 2’s answer

There are several differences between organizational behavior management and organizational development. One main difference is that they come from two different schools of thought of theories. OBM comes from the principles of ABA whereas the OD is based on humanistic approaches. A second difference is that OBM implies that there should be changes to all areas of the organization whereas OD is a top down directive. (Redmon,2001)

OD seems to look more at the process of an intervention and not the outcome. Data from the outcome of an intervention can help to determine the interventions impact on change within the organization.

All knowledge is subject to change and there for these is no right and wrong. Instead collaborating together to determine the best course is a better attitude to have, this is an example of humble behaviorism. (Redmon,2001)

For me personally, working alongside individuals that view ABA in a different manner can sometimes be hard. We have to work hand in hand with the school system who cannot always accommodate the needs of a child in the manner in which we think that they need to be accommodated. This is normally because of budget concerns in the public schools. Instead of arguing that one way is better than another way, it is important to collaborate on ways we can accommodate the child with the means we have on hand. We have to be humble and remember that we are working towards a common goal.
