The one event you may not choose is the American Revolution, which includes the American Revolutionary War, because I’ve used it as an example, below.
There is no single correct answer to this question. You will be graded on the strength of your argument for your three choices. A good argument will: a) be well written; b) contain good and relevant evidence to support your claims; c) provide specifics rather than make general or vague statements; and d) show you understand the choices you made.
You must answer with a narrative, not a list. There are no word count restrictions, and no other formatting instructions.
This short essay must be entirely in your own words: DO NOT USE ANY QUOTATIONS FROM ANY SOURCE. It’s okay to look up information from sources like textbooks and reliable web sites, but you must put the answer in your own words. Just changing a few words in a sentence is not adequate, so do be careful. Because you won’t be using quotations, citations should be unnecessary.
Here are examples of a bad and great short essay answers, using the American Revolution:
Bad Example
The American Revolution was important because it led to the creation of the United States of America.
That example is bad because it does not show that the author understands the Revolution other than knowing its name. it also does not explain why the creation of the United States is an important consequence. Overall, it is super vague and uninformative.
Great Example
The American Revolution took place in the late eighteenth century when some of the American colonists became unhappy with Parliament’s control of the thirteen colonies. Tensions increased over time until war broke out between the colonists and Great Britain. The Revolution is important for many reasons. First, it led to the creation of the United States, and its recognition as a legitimate nation by France. It also affirmed the idea of natural rights. The American Revolution also inspired other people in other countries to rebel against their governments, starting with France. But the Revolution failed to stand up to all its ideals, as was the case with slavery. That failure ultimately led to the American Civil War and more than a century of segregation and discrimination, something the nation still struggles with today.
That example is great because it makes it clear the author understands the basics of the Revolution, and specifically describes (not just lists) some of its most-important consequences.
