  • Jaw-Dropping Moment

Have you ever attended a meeting or speech where you dozed off because you were bored?

Why did you get bored (Was the speaker monotone? Did the speech run on too long? Was the content dry? Another reason?)

Have you ever experienced a “Jaw Dropping Moment” (see Ch. 5, Talk Like Ted)? Why was it a “Jaw Dropping Moment?”

You will have a presentation to complete. Share with us the topic that you have decided on. What are 1-2 things you can do to deliver a “Jaw-Dropping Moment” in your presentation?

PART A PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE DISCUSSION WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT & A DETAILED WHY?

Have you ever attended a meeting or speech where you dozed off because you were bored?

When I was a director at a private child care facility, I had to attend several conferences and meeting on education and management in the child care industry. I remember attending a conference about the different milestones from infant to preschoolers. The speaker didn’t keep her audience attention because her tone was robotic, soft tone and low-winded. She didn’t keep us engage at all. I actually saw someone playing a game on their phone, nodding off and people kept getting up.

Why did you get bored (Was the speaker monotone? Did the speech run on too long? Was the content dry? Another reason?)

I was bored with this particular speech was based off her tone of voice, power point had too much information, presentation was extremely long, repetitive and she didn’t show any personality with her delivery. I believe with anything pertaining to children, you can add color, games, music or anything fun to get your point across. She stood behind her podium reading off her index cards with little eye contact to her audience. You want to keep people engage when presenting valuable information.

Have you ever experienced a “Jaw Dropping Moment” (see Ch. 5, Talk Like Ted)? Why was it a “Jaw Dropping Moment?”

I remember attending a meeting about SAC, the speaker opened up with a magic trick. That magic trick was able to get everyone engage on the speaker, hanging onto every word and action. By opening up with something exciting allow the owners and directors to relax and cut that uneasy feeling you might have had prior. That magic trick was talked about later that day and even the next day. The speaker tone was energetic and friendly. He didn’t stand directly behind podium but he moved around a bit. His power points wasn’t overwhelming to look at. He also asked open-ended questions which allow interactions with his audience.

In the coming wks, you will have a presentation to complete. Share with us the topic that you have decided on. What are 1-2 things you can do to deliver a “Jaw-Dropping Moment” in your presentation?

For week 9 presentation, I will speak on why schools should implement Fun 2 Dance Fitness in their enrichment programs for the children.

Present videos, Pictures or Images, Eye-catching Headlines, Provide a catchy name to get the audience attention, Supported information to back up any graphics, Energetic tone, Eye Contact, Keep the audience engaged with humor and Ask open-ended questions to get interaction

PART B PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE DISCUSSION WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT & A DETAILED WHY: It is essential to keep your audience engaged from beginning to end during a presentation to avoid losing interest. I have attended several meetings where I had to fight sleep because the speaker couldn’t keep my attention. Let’s talk about some of those times and how to engage and interest an audience when public speaking.

Have you ever attended a meeting or speech where you dozed off because you were bored?

Yes, I have attended a meeting where I dozed off because I was bored and uninterested.

Why did you get bored (Was the speaker monotone? Did the speech run on too long? Was the content dry? Another reason?)

Here are a few reasons why I was bored during the presentation:

  • The speaker did not have an attention grabber to set the tone of the presentation
  • The speaker was monotone and scripted
  • The speaker read directly from the slides instead of personalizing the information.
  • The speaker was only focused on the content material and failed to keep the audience involved.
  • The speaker failed to provide “catchy visuals” on the slides.

Have you ever experienced a “Jaw Dropping Moment”? Why was it a “Jaw Dropping Moment?”

I recall experiencing a “Jaw-Dropping Moment” every six months when Verizon’s Vice President of the South Area, Charlie Falco, meets with the call center to discuss the organization’s performance, structure, and upcoming changes.

President Falco always enters the stage playing an “HR friendly” popular song with high energy. His music always an icebreaker that excites the crowd because we instantly relate through the music. He then asks, “How are you doing, Huntsville?” or “How’s the greatest center in the country?” His choice of words keeps us ready to engage. His introduction shows us that we are important and that he’s there for us. Usually, he moves into our center’s performance status for each department. We discuss what we are doing well, how we can do better, and any changes if applicable. While going through performance, he recognizes our top performers, top supervisor, and best team with a rewarding bonus, and this keeps the audience engage. Once we discuss changes such as new products or services for the organization, he opens the floor to the audience to address any questions or concerns. Falco keeps the energy up, and everyone’s undivided attention because he knows his audience, he humorous, and he tells personal stories. He shows us that we are a significant asset to the company.

My Topic for Presentation

I am going to focus on how to improve Verizon’s MyVerizon App to give customers more control, flexibility, and access to their wireless account. The new improvements will be based on Customer Service representative main calls to help save customer’s time and improve their customer experience.

What are some things I can do to deliver a “Jaw-Dropping Moment” in your presentation?

  • Starting with a strong opening will set the tone for my presentation by being energized, genuine, and tailoring to my audience
  • Focus on the content, delivery, and design of the presentation
  • Focus on the audience by personalizing the information and using relatable situations
  • Encourage audience engagement
  • Write clear headlines, keep it short, and easy to comprehend.

You are ready to give your presentation and feel confident about your topic. However, some people fear public speaking more than death! There are techniques you can employ to remain confident and to have clear, concise, and impactful communication.

How will you keep your nerves calm? How will you make sure you cover each point you want to make? How will you use effective hand gestures, exert the right tone, and speak with confidence? To avoid getting too nervous or losing your train of thought, choose a strategy from “Ch. 5, Talk Like Ted” that you will use to help get you back on track and discuss why you chose that strategy.

Please respond to each question below. Remember to cite sources.

1. What are some activities that can maintain a positive mood and reduce a negative mood? For example, does being with friends, viewing a comedy, or exercising reduce your negative mood and increase your positive mood?

2. Reflect on the physiological arousal you have experienced during an intense emotion. How did that arousal affect you? Did it provide information about the quality or intensity of the emotion? Or was the arousal merely your body’s preparation for action?
