The scientific world

The scientific world, physicists and chemists especially, are like kids at Christmas currently because they believe they have proven that a particular particle called the Higgs boson exists. According to theory, the Higgs boson is at the very heart of all matter. Sometimes referred to as the “God particle”, it is believed by many to be the particle that gives mass to every other sub-atomic particle. If all goes as planned, the new Large Hadron Collider in France – the most powerful particle accelerator in history – will smash particles into atoms and see what comes out. Some, however, fear that such a powerful collision will set off a reaction that could create a black hole that would suck up the Earth like a cosmic vacuum cleaner. That reminds me of the story of when the first Atomic Bomb was exploded right here in New Mexico: Enrico Fermi supposedly was taking bets on whether the blast would set off a chain reaction in the atmosphere that would completely burn the Earth to a cinder – he thought it might, but I don’t know how he was planning on collecting on his bets! Do a little research on this (just type in “Higgs boson” or “God particle” in your search engine) or go to this great article that was published in National Geographic: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/03/god-part… and give us your opinion on these points: Do you think spending so much money – the equivalent of billions of dollars – on projects like this is worthwhile? Does it worry you that some people think this could create a black hole that would consume Earth? Should humans continue to persue projects like this (the space program, for another example) or should we try to solve our everyday problems (health care, poverty, etc.) first? Does it bother you that this project is in France rather than the United States?

NEWS FLASH! Big news on the Higgs boson front. Type in “Higgs boson” in your search engine and you’ll see some great brand new info on the apparently sucessful quest for this important particle. Here’s an example of an article from 2012, but there are a lot more current ones out there too:

If you are interested, here’s a pretty cool article on the search for the Higgs boson and toward the bottom of the article, there is a neat interactive (the Big Bang Machine) about the Large Hadron Collider. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47783507/ns/technology_and_science-science

Evaluating Emerging Trends and Technologies for a Company

Through this week’s Learning Resources, you were introduced to the concept of emerging trends and technologies. With the rapid growth and expansion of these new technologies, it can be difficult to sort through them and identify ones that are of high quality. For a business, it is important not only to identify such new technologies and innovations but also to analyze their appropriateness and the value they could add to an organization.

For this Discussion, you will examine an emerging trend or technology and determine the potential value that it has for being incorporated into your company.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review this week’s Learning Resources.
Review the Academic Writing Expectations for 2000/3000-Level Courses, provided in this week’s Learning Resources.
By Day 3

Post a 150- to 225-word (2- to 3-paragraph) description of how you would go about assessing whether or not the adoption of an emerging trend or technology would add value to your company if you were the CEO. In your description, do the following:

Identify the main areas of value you would be looking to add to your business (e.g., profitability).
Describe the important pieces of information you would need to know, or need to take into consideration, about the emerging trend or technology in order to make a final decision.
To support your response, be sure to reference at least one properly cited scholarly source.

Real world Exercise

PART1. Using a web browser, perform some research on a newer malware variant that has been reported by a major malware containment vendor. Using a search engine, go to the vendor’s web site;this could be Symantec, McAfee, or any of their

competitors. Visit one malware prevention software vendor. Search for the newest malware variants and pick one. Note its name and try to understand how it works. Now look for information about that same malware from at least one other vendor. Were you able to see this malware at both vendors? If so, are there any differences in how they are reported between two vendors? Write 300 words. Include references.

PART 2. Using a Web search tool, identify cases in which private information was disclosed when computer equipment was discarded. Recent examples have included smartphones (like Black-Berry) that were sold without proper data cleansing and hard drives that were sold without data cleansing after the computers they were originally used in were upgraded. Write 300 words. Include references.

Provide documented evidence, of the chosen exercise above (i.e. provide answers to each of the stated questions). Detailed and significant answers will be allotted full point value. Incomplete, inaccurate, or inadequate answers will receive less than full credit depending on the answers provided. Please follow APA format.
