Equal rights amendment

In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott met with other women for the first Woman’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Alice Paul introduced the Amendment for Women’s Equity in 1923, renaming it the Equal Rights Amendment in 1943. Throughout the mid-1970s, arguments by ERA opponents such as Phyllis Schlafly, right-wing leader of the Eagle Forum/STOP ERA, played on the same fears that had generated female opposition to woman suffrage. Anti-ERA organizers claimed that the ERA would deny woman’s right to be supported by her husband, privacy rights would be overturned, women would be sent into combat, and abortion rights and homosexual marriages would be upheld. On January 27, 2020, the state of Virginia made history to become the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. With a passing vote from both chambers of the General Assembly, the Equal Rights Amendment reached the minimum number of ratified states required by Congress when it sent the ERA to the states for ratification in 1972.

Is the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment still worth fighting for or have we lost? Discuss whether or not you would advocate on your social media to pass the ERA-why or why not?
