The Social World: Presentation

Thus far, we have considered the major themes of social psychology: social thinking, social relations, and social influence.  In this interactive assignment, we will integrate knowledge from all three areas to provide a comprehensive analysis of a social movement, issue, event, or idea.

To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “The Self System in Reciprocal Determinism” (Bandura, 1978) and “Social Action” (Synder & Omoto, 2007), and peruse The Stanford SPARQ Solutions Catalog (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..  In addition, review “Ten Simple Rules for Making Good Oral Presentations” (Bourne, 2007) and “Ten Simple Rules for a Good Poster Presentation” (Erren & Bourne, 2007).

Then, identify a current or historical social movement (e.g., the Tea Party, Black Lives Matter, the Reformation, etc.), issue (e.g., gay marriage, school choice, abortion, slavery, etc.), event (e.g., the 2016 Presidential election, the Rwandan genocide, the Bubonic Plague, etc.), or idea (e.g., democracy, the nuclear family, peace, etc.).  Create a multimedia presentation (e.g., a video, poster, etc.) that depicts the selected topic in enough detail that classmates, even with no prior knowledge, will gain a basic understanding.  (For additional guidance, review a guide for creating Presentations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., available through the Ashford Writing Center.).  Your presentation should apply psychological insight from at least two of the three areas covered thus far in the course (social thinking, social relations, and/or social influence) to analyze relevant social factors.  In your presentation, interpret social psychological theory and research, including the concept of reciprocal determinism in relation to this social movement, issue, event, or idea.  Describe research methods used to investigate relevant phenomena and summarize actual or hypothetical applications of social psychological insight.   Employ knowledge from social psychology to identify specific careers or disciplines that might be especially well suited to addressing the underlying issues in your example.  Be sure to maintain an objective stance.  (In other words, if you select a social issue, avoid sharing your opinion regarding the “right” or “wrong” view.  Your classmates should not be able to determine your personal views based on what you post.).

You must include a both a multimedia component (e.g., link to or embedded PowerPoint, screencast, video recording, etc.) and a transcript or other written component that fully explains the audio or visual elements. Please utilize APA style to format your transcript or other written component. Upload the completed assignment (including both the multimedia component and the written component) into Waypoint.  Next week, you will share your presentation with your classmates in a discussion forum.

Utilize a minimum of five credible scholarly sources to inform your thinking on the topic, in addition to required course resources as applicable.  Additional credible references are encouraged.

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen the audio narrative of others.  Note you are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentation.  If you have a documented disability accommodation that might interfere with your ability to complete this assignment, you may contact your instructor to develop a comparable alternative assignment.  If you have other issues that you feel may be a barrier to your ability to complete this course or this assignment please contact the Office of Access and Wellness at: [email protected] .

social scienece 189 urban legends

As part of the course assignments, you are required to complete a final project that
reflects on the major themes and questions developed throughout the quarter. This project
is due on Canvas on Friday, March 13 th at 11:59PM. ***LATE PROJECTS WILL
NOT BE ACCEPTED***
The portfolio will contain a collection of six urban legends (with extensive analysis)
covering each of our main subject areas (teen horrors, racial fears, conspiracy theories, supernatural stories, contamination/disease fears, technology fears).Your portfolio must

include:
1) An Introductory Statement: This one-to-two page statement should detail your process
in finding and selecting your legends. It should also reflect on key class topics and
themes that aided in your understanding of these legends. (10 points)
2) Six personally collected narratives, with accompanying analysis. Each narrative
discussion should include the following:
• Basic background information, including the person or source from whom you
collected the narrative, and where that person in turn first heard it. Also, make a
concerted effort to locate the narrative’s folk origins through consultation of class
readings and/or internet inquiries. (30 points)
• Discuss what specific characteristics make this an urban
legend/legend/rumor/memorate/truth claim. (10 points)
• (Briefly) Narrative itself, including any variations or parallels found in class
readings/discussions. (10 points)
• Most importantly—One full page (or more) of analysis: How did this narrative
fit course themes? Is it believable, particularly to the storyteller? Does the
narrative hold an obvious social function or contain a clear moral message? Is it
conveying a sense of anxiety or fear? Use specific arguments and examples from
both our class discussions and readings in your analysis! (40 points)
Format: This is meant to be a creative assignment; choose the format the best fits your
set of legends. You may use illustrations, pictures, graphics, and specialized fonts at your
leisure. You are also required to provide a works cited page.
Topics: This portfolio offers the opportunity to select legend topics of your choice. I
encourage VARIETY, in both your sources and your themes. You must collect one
narrative from each major course theme from this quarter (supernatural legends, race
and urban legends, teen horror legends, travel/tourism/contamination legends,
conspiracy theories, or legends relating to media and technology). You may find
legends online, from friends and family, through library sources, or in the media. Do not
limit yourself to finding legends on snopes. At least four of the legends you collect must
come via oral transmission from friends, relatives, or other in-person interactions. If you
experience difficulty in finding sources, please come talk to me! You must cite all
sources (APA format preferred).
**Note: Please respect your respondents and their narratives. Use pseudonyms by
default.**
Grading: Your final portfolio is worth a whopping 40% of your final grade. Alex and I
will grade this final project based on your ability to fully engage and analyze the topics
covered during this quarter. Do not skimp on your analysis. Do not try to put together
your portfolio at the last minute. Exercise good judgment in your legend selections, and
take the time to put together a thoughtful, visually interesting portfolio.
Submission: This project is due on Friday, March 13
th by 11:59pm. Due to time
constraints, late portfolios will not be accepted. Although physical copies will be
allowed, we prefer that you submit your portfolio on our Canvas website.

I will also upload two previous papers from this course and its comments, as refrenece.

5 4 assignment turnitin the right thing to do

Getting Started

With a variety of perspectives on diversity in your repertoire, it is time to decide why diversity is the right thing for any organization you choose. For this assignment, the question is not whether, but why, and the presumption is that it is the right thing to do. Your responsibility is to explain why in a persuasive way that meets academic expectations for relevance and rigor. Through this assignment, you will distill your own thoughts on the topic and be able to defend diversity as a strategic and ethical imperative in your organization.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Explain why diversity is good for the organization.
  • Understand foundations of the law on diversity.

Resources

  • Bible (New International Version)
  • Textbook: Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership
  • OER Text: Government Regulation and the Legal Environment of Business
  • Article: “Best Practices or Best Guesses? Assessing the Efficacy of Corporate Affirmative Action and Diversity Policies”

Background Information

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in all federally assisted programs. Application of such laws affects many organizations in many ways. Though all organizations are not federally assisted, many may be connected to such organizations and will sometimes, by extension, be required to abide by these laws. Often, to provide internal guidance to their employees, organizations will have their own policies to explain corporate positions on a variety of topics, including discrimination. Many business executives will give these types of directives to their attorneys and other executive leaders for policy formulation, regardless of the personal feelings of those individuals.

The title of this workshop assignment, The Right Thing to Do, need not be the title of your paper, though it should be similar in theme. The specifics should be of your choosing, but the general theme of the assignment should be an analysis of what the majority (51% or more) decide is important as opposed to what is the right decision (for all, the community, the organization).

Consider how diversity of cultures, perspectives, experiences, genders, and ages benefits an organization and leads to business growth. The output should include content that you can imagine presenting to the organization’s leadership as a policy model.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Review Chapter 11 of Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership. As you read, think about the ethical reasons that diversity is ethically the right thing to do.
  3. Read “Best Practices or Best Guesses? Assessing the Efficacy of Corporate Affirmative Action and Diversity Policies”.
  4. Review the 5.1 devotional to provide a biblical perspective on this assignment.
  5. Write an 800- to 1000-word research paper in which you:
    1. Create a policy statement that summarizes why diversity should be an ethical imperative for organizations.
      1. Use both a secular and biblical perspective in crafting your position.
      2. Provide a detailed evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
    2. Summarize the legal arguments for diversity within an organization.
      1. This summary should be an analysis of what laws impact organizational diversity and the agencies responsible for addressing related complaints.
      2. Provide a detailed evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
    3. Summarize the benefits to an organization for embracing diversity.
      1. The output should include content that you can imagine presenting to the organization’s leadership as a policy model.
      2. Provide a detailed evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
  6. Be sure to use correct spelling, grammar, and APA format and include at least five scholarly sources in your response. (Note: cover pages, academic sources, reference pages, etc. do not count towards the word length requirement in your paper.) For questions on APA Style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
  7. When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself (name your assignment “LastName_TheRightThing”) and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop (Turnitin will be enabled).

The reference sources need to be cited in the body of the paper.
