wk 3 social learning experiment

Phillip Zimbardo conducted one of the most famous experiments in the field of social psychology. The results of this experiment, the Stanford Prison Experiment, triggered questions on social learning theory, conformity, and just how far people will go to play an assigned role with a perceived authority figure present.

Read about the Stanford Prison Experiment and watch the embedded videos on the website.

Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word response to the following questions:

  • What are the major tenets of Social Learning Theory, and how were these tenets displayed in the Stanford Prison Experiment?
  • What role would you have preferred if you had been a participant in this study, a prison guard or an inmate? Why?
  • What would you have done differently than the participants in the study (both inmates and guards)?
  • The field of psychology gained a lot of information from this study. Given the ethical concerns, was the knowledge we now have about social learning, conformity, and obedience to authority figures worth it? Why or why not?

Format your response consistent with APA guidelines.

Include at least two references

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

Learning and understanding how to uses statistical software and how to apply statistical calculation is important, because scientist, researchers, public health officials, and other personnel uses statistics to analyze data from experiments and medical studies, by which the data is distributed in articles and other medical and important documentation sources.

When analyzing data, statistics help to determine what type of data to collect, for example, if a researcher wanted to assess the relationship between depression and the dosages of dopamine, they would need to know what variables to use, what statistical test to use. For example, ANOVA tests, correlation tests, linear regression, t-test, hypothesis testing, experimental testing, and others. In order to perform these tests, statistical software is needed, such as SAS or Stata which is the most commonly used software in the healthcare field, therefore, this individual would be able to analyze the data (Dembe et al., 2011).

The next step is how to interpret the result received from data analysis, this would require knowledge of basic statistic calculation and understanding how to interpret and apply the result to real-world applications. For example, let us say the result from seeking the relationship between depression and dopamine stated that there is a positive relationship between higher dosage of dopamine on depression, or if the hypothesis testing noted that H0 = high levels of dopamine, with a p-value of 0.03. An understanding of statistics would reveal that the null hypothesis is accepted because the p-value is lower than p-0.05, therefore, higher dopamine levels reduce the onset of depression.

Additionally, a lack of statistical knowledge might lead to misinterpretation in data that could lead to drastic consequences in the public health field. For instance, a pandemic is at large and a public health official with a lack of statistical knowledge, calculated and misinterpreted data, this could lead to mismanagement of the pandemic which could lead to increased death rates.
