The Barrio, by Robert Ramirez

The Barrio, by Robert Ramirez (pp. 283-288), is a descriptive piece.  Write a paragraph in which you analyze The Barrio and explain who you think is the intended audience (Hint: look at where it was first published), what the main idea (or thesis) is that the author is trying to get across, and share one or two of the descriptions you feel were the most effective in the essay.  Why were these descriptions effective?

BRAVE NEW WORLD REVISITED [1958] by Aldous Huxley

This is the prompt:

Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World Revisited in 1958. He offers various warnings and projections concerning the direction he thinks the world will be headed generations into the future, i.e., NOW. Judging from the entire book, but focusing primarily on four chapters (i.e., Chapter 4: “Propaganda in a Democratic Society,” Chapter 5: “Propaganda Under a Dictatorship,” Chapter 6: “The Arts of Selling,” and Chapter 7: “Brainwashing”), address this question: How accurate were Huxleys projections? Cite specifics from Huxleys text and compare or contrast them to specific current events. (This shouldnt be difficult, as youve been keeping up with the news every week as part of your Op-Ed assignments.) It would be wise to cite specific ideas from Huxleys text, but you need not quote directly. If you do quote directly, however, remember to follow proper MLA format. Your response should be 3-4 pages long in standard essay format. I’m not requiring a lot of pages, so try to make them count. Remember: An essay is not one long paragraph! Needless to say (and yet I feel compelled to say it anyway), an essay consists of an introduction, multiple body paragraphs, a conclusion, and a Works Cited page! And remember to give the essay a creative title!

Write an essay about the challenges which the nation and its predecessor colonies faced starting with the first European colonization to end of the Revolutionary War.

Write an essay about the challenges which the nation and its predecessor colonies faced starting with the first European colonization to end of the Revolutionary War. Describe how a fledgling federal government stood up against states and others who defied its authority. Feel free to compare the American Revolution to the French Revolution and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. You may want to mention things such as the plight of African-Americans and Native Americans, struggles between certain groups of states, the challenge of expanding the right to vote and bringing the common man into a political system dominated by the mercantile elites.

You have editorial discretion on how much time to devote to each thing.  The point is to demonstrate learning.  The examples mentioned above are not exclusive to others you may find or read about.  I leave it up to you to discuss how America was up to an imperfect start.

Write an exam essay of at least six to seven pages, double spaced 12 point New Times Roman font, discussing your thoughts on these readings.
