Infant Development

How Babies are seen differently now..
https://www.ted.com/talks/alison_gopnik_what_do_babies_think/transcript?language=en
In the beginning of the video Alison Gopnik states beginning at 19 seconds into the Ted Talk Video that over twenty years ago psychologist thought that a baby’s “mind was irrational, illogical, egocentric, that he couldn’t take the perspective of another person or understand cause and effect.” Thinking about just the start of her speech I immediately think back to all my days as a child care worker wondering how different it would be if I had been born some thirty years ago what would my mind think of children and would it be different because of the time that I had been set in.

We are talking about baby brain growth this week – This statement above really has changed.

What can you add to the board that shows how we think differently about maturation of children now compared to even 20 years ago?

the “student loan bubble” and proposed solutions to assist the impacted economic actors.

In class we discussed the concept of wage differentials.  Historically, a correlation has existed between educational attainment and income level.  Acquiring more education (human capital) has always been promoted as a means of escaping poverty.  Unfortunately, due to rising college costs, students have taken on unprecedented levels of student loan debt.  For this paper, you will research (with a minimum of three additional resources) the “student loan bubble” and proposed solutions to assist the impacted economic actors.

The paper should address some of these main issues:

Rising college costs and the reason for them.
Is a college degree still worth the investment?
What has been the trend in student loan debt over time?
What are the individual and societal consequences of excessive student loan debt?
What are some current proposals or programs aimed at solving the problem?
What are some counter-arguments against student debt forgiveness?
What responsibility should be borne by the borrower for the problem?
Should college be reformed and if so what a reform look like?

about gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major forces acting in nature.

S8P5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major forces acting in nature.

a. Construct an argument using evidence to support the claim that fields (i.e., magnetic fields, gravitational fields, and electric fields) exist between objects exerting forces on each other even when the objects are not in contact.

b. Plan and carry out investigations to demonstrate the distribution of charge in conductors and insulators. (Clarification statement: Include conduction, induction, and friction.)

c. Plan and carry out investigations to identify the factors (e.g., distance between objects, magnetic force produced by an electromagnet with varying number of wire turns, varying number or size of dry cells, and varying size of iron core) that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces. (Clarification statement: Including, but not limited to, generators or motors.)

Conflict Management Self-Reflection

Conflict Management Self-Reflection (Based on the Personal Growth Exercise, Chapter 15; page 301)
Think about your own personality, and more specifically the conscious and unconscious reactions you have experienced in the past regarding confrontation with others. You do NOT have to describe any confrontation situation that you have had in the past. Simply, think to yourself about how the situation influenced your attitude, perception, emotions, and decision making.

  1. Next, describe what aspects of assertive confrontation in which you feel you are strongest, and which aspects you feel that you need to work on to become stronger. Please give just a brief explanation for each aspect you mention.
  2. Last, using the suggestions described in the exercise on page 301 (or any others that you can think of that are not mentioned) discuss what specific things could you do to help develop your own ability and attitude necessary to effectively initiate and then manage an assertive confrontation with others.
