Creativity and the brain:

I was intrigued to read that the prefrontal cortex is the last structure to develop in the human brain (Averill, 2004). I found this interesting because human beings have the ability to be creative and imaginative at an early age, and prior to the complete development of the prefrontal cortex. The human brain has the capacity to be creative and imaginative before the completion of this brain structure known for creativity.

Creativity, emotion and cognition are intertwined in a complex and important way.  Emotional intelligence involves perception, thought facilitation and emotional regulation (Averill, 2004), which means cognition and emotion may have an effect on the creative process of an individual. The higher an individuals emotional intelligence score, the more the individual is able to deal with their emotions in healthy ways. According to Geher, Betancourt & Jewell (2017) the ability to accurately know the emotional states of others, is a basic aspect of emotional intelligence (PP 228)

Researchers Hansenne & Legrand (2012) studied a population of 73 children between the ages of 9-12 and found that emotional intelligence had no significant effect on the participants school performance, however researchers noted creativity was a predictor of school performance (PP 264). I was surprised by the results of the study, because I would have expected both creativity and emotional intelligence to have a significant effect on student school performance.

Inquiry on Perception

1. Explore how senses differ between animals and humans and how our biology/ecology can make sense of these differences.

How can eagles see a mouse from 200 feet in the air?
Why can bears smell a person from kilometers away?
How many hot peppers can you eat?
How come city folk cant hear that well?

Your assignment could** included details about the topic such as;

What is it/ how do we define it/ how have we come to understand the concept?
How is it related to perception / the brain / development / etc.
How the topic informs us about how perception works
How has this topic been explored in the scientific literature?
**The above list is not intended to define the structure of your paper and the topics you must cover. Rather, think of this as a suggestive list to help develop your thinking on the topic of your choice**

The assignment should be approximately 3 double spaced pages in length with an upper limit of 4 pages.  (NOTE: Title pages, images, and reference sections do not count towards limits)
All information should be cited using APA formatting (see formatting notes below). Please consider using citethisforme.com (Links to an external site.) to help you create your reference section. It speeds up the process quite a bit!
