Ethical Issues Shawn

There are many risks that police face daily. In order to understand these risk and plan for the worse case scenario, a risk assessment is applied. It is the responsibility of managers and line officers to be able to identify risk and problems that are “problems lying in wait” (Policeone, 2017). Problems include a cop with a racial bias. That is a risk that needs to be mitigated. There may exist a jail deputy who does not understand the current policies and standard operating procedures (Policeone, 2017). If a supervisor want to be everyone’s best friend that is a problem lying in wait. Ignoring all these problems can lead to a tragedy and there will be an investigation sparked, at which time someone will be held accountable for deciding to not identify the problem and come up with a way to mitigate that problem. That is risk management, the ability to identify risks, and address those risk head on with ways to ensure the overall risk stays low.

There are different types of risk that police face on a daily. There are external risks such as weather, pandemics, street gangs, and terrorist. Police are to ensure that they come up with disaster management plans in the case of these external risks manifesting. There are also legal and regulatory risks that officers face daily. Police must ensure that they follow all laws and regulations.
