NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

Module 3 – Case
NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE
Case Assignment
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts; his birthplace is preserved and open to the public. William Hawthorne, the author’s great-great-great-grandfather, a Puritan, was the first of the family to emigrate from England, first settling in Dorchester, Massachusetts before moving to Salem. There he became an important member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and held many political positions including magistrate and judge, becoming infamous for his harsh sentencing. William’s son, and the author’s great-great-grandfather, John Hawthorne, was one of the judges who oversaw the Salem Witch Trials. Having learned about this, the author may have added the “w” to his family name in his early twenties, shortly after graduating from college, in an effort to dissociate himself from his notorious forbearers.

Hawthorne’s father, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sr., was a sea captain who died in 1808 of yellow fever in Suriname. After his death, young Nathaniel, his mother and two sisters moved in with maternal relatives, the Mannings, in Salem, where they lived for 10 years. During this time, on November 10, 1813, young Hawthorne was hit on the leg while playing “bat and ball” and became lame and bedridden for a year, though several physicians could find nothing wrong with him.

For this Case Assignment you will read and consider the symbolism found in Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown. Symbolism is always part of Hawthornes works. You may find them in names of characters or recurring objects (clothes, bushes, darkness, etc.), and in other ways.

The movie Fighting with My Family.

For this assignment, I’d like you to simply watch a film and write a one-page review about your selection. Full-length movies and documentaries are preferred. No television shows, please. I would strongly encourage (but not require) using this assignment to engage with pandemic-related content–there is no shortage of these available on streaming websites at the moment.

Reviews should feature a thesis statement, (Example: Star Wars is a great movie because of the strong acting, cool visual effects, and great story-telling.) an introduction and conclusion, as well as a paragraph for each talking point. In the example provided, there would be three body paragraphs: one talking about the acting, one talking about the visual effects, and one talking about the story-telling.

Remember, film reviews can be good or bad. A film review discussing why a movie is bad is just as good as a film review discussing why a movie is great. Also, remember that the fewer points you make in your thesis statement, the more you will have to analyze and discuss those points in order to hit the one-page length requirement; so: if you only have two points in your thesis statement, you will need to talk about those two points more than someone who has three points in their thesis. Essentially, you will write fewer paragraphs, but they will have to be longer and more drawn-out paragraphs. The choice on how many points you will make in your thesis is up to you.

Epistemology

You are to answer what is truth?

Recognize, however, this is not an opinion paper, but rather an argumentative essay.  The essay will have a clear structure, a single claim toward which the entire essay is directed, and most importantly, relevant reasons that support the central claim.  This last feature is what distinguishes an argument from mere opinion.  The essay should also reflect an attention to detailed (close) reading
