Lothar Ledderose, Ten Thousand Things

First, read “Introduction and Chap. 1” from Lothar Ledderose, Ten Thousand Things: Module and Mass
Production in China (Princeton Univ. Press, 2004). File ledderose_intro_and chapter 1.pdf. Focus on his
argument and the role of modularity and modules in Chinese Script. Summarize Ledderose’s argument in

a few sentences, and remember to include what module and modularity is. How does the first chapter

relate to what he writes in his introduction?
Second, read David Keightley, “Origins of Writing in China,” 1990. The first thing I recommend is skimming

the article and skimming all the images. Keightley’s argument is recapitulated in the first two pages and on

pages 194-198. In your notes, write what is his argument? What factors does he use to make his

argument? Please include it in the typed reading notes you hand in.

Project Manangement

Reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Respond to the following prompts: “What do I feel are the most important aspects of my learning in the chapters

this week?” and “What about this learning was really worthy of my time and understanding?” Then explain how important it is in society or business.

Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:

Describe the organizational structure of your school or company. What difficulties have you encountered working within this structure?
Write a job description for a project manager in a matrix organization. Assume that only the project manager is employed full time by the project.
Henry Ford invented mass production. In doing so, he perfected the assembly line concept in which each worker does only one job or a handful of jobs and is

given little other responsibility. This worked well for 70 years; however, it became apparent in the 1990s that an increasing number of U.S. companies could

not produce a high-quality product by sticking to the assembly line model. What has changed?
[Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of

your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]

The Importance of Symbolism in The Natural

As we have seen and discussed, Bernard Malamud uses a great deal of symbolism in The Natural. The trains, the references to mythology and the significance of

the names all contribute to our understanding of the text. As Diane Henningfield says, The Natural is “only apparently about baseball.”

Please write a critical essay that addresses the question of what the book is really about and explores the way that the symbols used by Malamud help us to

understand the underlying themes of the work.

The references to real events and people, such as Babe Ruth and the White Sox scandal, also add to the depth of the text. You may want to address these

issues, and you may also choose to discuss the ways in which the book is relevant to current society.

Please use Diane Henningfield’s essay as source material, along with your notes from our class discussions. You may also use other sources that you find

through the GCC Library, but please only use sources that are appropriate for an academic essay. Sources such as Shmoop and SparkNotes are not sophisticated

enough for this assignment, and they are also inappropriate sources in general because they often contain inaccurate and incomplete information. Please

provide a Works Cited page that lists all the outside sources you use in your essay.
