Confucianism

Between Confucius and Mencius, we find distinct views on the relationship between human nature and benevolence. Is virtue something that we must learn? Or are we essentially benevolent? Or are both Confucius and Mencius mistaken, and we are essentially evil?

In a clear, carefully written discussion post, take a stand on this issue. Whatever shape your answer takes, it  should be informed by Joel Kuppermans chapter five and six (entitled Confucius and Mencius, respectively)  along with The Analects.

As always, you should think of your discussion post as a short (1-2 page) essay. Make sure to provide thoughtful reasons behind your response.

Jainism and Avoiding Harm

Consider two Jain views: 1) that everything in the universe is conscious, and 2) we ought to live so as to avoid causing harm. Together, these claims contribute to Jains embracing vegetarianism, so as to avoid harming other animals.  However, even vegetables are conscious, on this view. So, committing harm in one form or another seems unavoidable. This presents a problem. Should one opt for sitting motionless and starving to death, so as to avoid harming any other being? But in doing so, does one not still harm oneself?

In a clear, carefully written discussion post, develop an answer these questions. That is, on the assumption of the two Jain views mentioned above, what seems the right course of action to take? Is the same course action required by both Jain monks and nuns (on the one hand) and laypersons (on the other)? Whatever shape your answer takes, it  should be informed by Michael Molloys presentation of Jainism (in the chapter entitled Jainism and Sikhism). You are also welcome to reference other presentations of Jain philosophy.

As always, you should think of your discussion post as a short (1-2 page) essay

Healthy Eating

I’ve selected my  that is typically seen as unhealthy.

My favorite food is Fried chicken which is deep fried in oil (not olive oil)
with White rice and potato and baked macaroni and cheese

What ingredients would you replace to make the item healthier?  For instance, if an item called for hydrogenate oil, what would a healthier alternative? If an item calls for milk  what would you use to make a substitution.

The fried chicken could be fried in olive oil or coconut oil.
It could also be out in an air fryer versus deep fried in oil .
Also some of the Amount of seasoning thats used such as
Adobe
Lawrys Seasoning salt
Garlic powder
Onion Powder
Soul Seasoning
Black pepper

The white rice could be replaced with cous cous or maybe brown rice instead.
The baked potato could be eaten without the sour cream, butter, salt and black pepper.

Baked Macaroni and cheese could use healthier cheese versus
4 Cracker barrel extra sharp cheese
1 Egg
1 cup of sugar
1 box of elbow macaroni
Gallon of whole milk
Pinch of black pepper
Bread Crumbs

Keep in mind the below questions;

1.) What would be a healthier option have more vitamins?
2.) What would that substitution help to eliminate disease?
3.) Would your alterations alter the caloric, fat or fiber content?
