Short Papers 1

The Coronavirus pandemic provides a useful testing ground for international relations theory. There are a variety of currents at play: In some regards there is greater cooperation among countries (Cuban doctors being deployed around the globe). You have had acts of international isolationism (closure of borders both between and within countries). Some would even say capitalism has been suspended. The domestic and global economy is now firmly in the hands of governments, reluctantly or strategically, tasked with carrying out crisis mitigation (oil shocks and concerted use of monetary and fiscal policy by central banks).

What do you make of all of this?

In this assignment you are required to examine the contours of the global pandemic within the dominant IR paradigms. Specifically, using your knowledge of neorealist, liberal, marxist, and constructivist theory, formulate a nuanced analysis of the current situation. In other words, evaluate the contemporary global situation under COVID-19 from the above theoretical frameworks. Please cite the literature extensively in combination with anecdotal examples from current events.
You should be asking yourself: How would a neorealist (liberal, marxist, and constructivist) analyze our present predicament? Be sure to use examples to support your point. Finally, you will suggest the most applicable theory to both describe and explain the global crisis.

does early childhood education have an affect on future success?

Task: You must create a 10-15 question survey that is related to the topic of your annotated
bibliography/research topic. Some of your topics will have a very clear connection to a survey,
others may have to be a bit more creative. But either way, we can work together to figure out
the best option of who to survey for this assignment.
It is helpful to think about the goal of the surveyi.e. what are you trying to find out? Who do
you need to talk to to get that information? What questions should you ask to meet that goal?
You can ask questions about the topic, but can also include some demographic questionsi.e.
age, race, year in school or educational background, income.
What you will hand in:
A. A 10-15 question survey that adheres to the good survey question principles and is
formatted in a way that is clear & easy to read.
B. A short discussion of sampling and mode of administration (about 1 page, double-spaced). It
should include the following information:
Who would you survey?
Which sampling strategy would you use, and why?
What would you use as your sampling frame (if using a probability sampling method)?
Which mode of administration would you use to distribute your survey?
Would you use any incentives to facilitate recruitment of participants?
How will this be evaluated?
This assignment is worth 10 pts
Part A- up to 7 pts
In order to receive full credit, you must:
Include a short intro statement i.e. — This survey covers topics on law enforcement and
will take about 10 minutes to complete. All responses are confidential. Thank you for
your time!
Have at least 10 questions that could be used to collect data to help answer your
research question
Questions and answer options should adhere to survey question principlesi.e. they
should not be leading, should not use jargon, answer options should be exhaustive &
mutually exclusive, etc.
Be formatted in a way that is easy to read/understand/fill-out, have no typos or
grammatical errors.
Should mostly be closed-ended questions, with open-ended questions used when
needed/makes sense to ask
Part B- up to 3 pts
In order to receive full credit, you should have a clear discussion of:
Who you will survey
How you will recruit them
How you will administer the survey
*Sampling method must be identified & justification for selecting it must be providedi.e. if
you are surveying police officers in Albany, a logical sampling frame would be a roster of police
officers employed by the city, and then you could use simple random or stratified sampling. But
other populations of interest may not have a sampling frame, so you would want to use a
different methodlike snowball.

Babel and academic writing about “Babel”

This week we’ll be looking at several different critical theories and academic styles of responding to a

film.
First, watch the 2006 Golden Globe-winning movie “Babel.”

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VV99BRUKaVTN05YSLxuJ0aS9X80ZRAR/view
Second, scan the critical essays below, all about the movie “Babel.” Some are more accessible than

others.
Find one that sounds interesting and read it more carefully. The idea is to find other scholars who can

make richer your understanding of a piece of media, who can help you connect together various ideas

about the
world, as represented by this carefully assembled film. Will upload files. (The first five pages from the

Müberra
Yuksel manuscript seem the most understandable.)
For this week’s post, write a response to the movie “Babel” that’s informed by some of the above criticism.

If
you were performing as an academic critic, you’d begin a project with a “literature review,” a summary of

key
text that have been written about your topic. The above texts, then, serve as your “Babel” lit review. You

can
also look up reviews in popular media https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/babelor research how “Babel”

did
financially at the Box Office Mojo site. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl155551233/
