worshop

Writing Workshop
After an embarrassing sign incident at the restaurant you own, you decide to offer employees a six-week fundamental writing skills workshop.

A local business communication instructor, who has experience teaching writing skills at Treleaven Community College, will facilitate the sessions.

To encourage employees to attend these optional sessions, write a memo that explains why you’re offering the workshop and why employees should participate.

Audience
Remember that your employees have other responsibilities. They may be students with classes and homework assignments, or they may have a spouse and children, or they may work another job. As you write your memo, consider that your employees may not feel the workshop is personally worthwhile, but even if it is, it may be difficult to attend.

Purpose
You want to convince your employees to sign up for the workshop. The workshop is optional. If you make the workshop mandatory, you are no longer persuading your employeesyou’re giving them an order. The challenge of the assignment is to find a way persuade your employees to willingly participate.

Structure
Your memo will include both information and persuasion. The information should answer key questions such as start and end dates, how long the sessions run, etc. Because those are the first questions that occur to your employees, they should be answered first. Your persuasion should then follow. When deciding what to include in your persuasion, consider incentives that your employees find valuable.

Style
When writing to employees, choose a style that matches your managerial style. Some managers communicate with employees very formally, while others communicate informally. The key is to be an effective communicator.

Music Video as Back Art – Final Project

Final Project 30 Points
The goal of the final project is to demonstrate your understanding of the learning objectives for
the course:
Articulate the distinction between blackness as an embodied and disembodied concept
Identify lineages of visual artists that have emerged from this music video movement
Identify the main theoretical challenges music video as black art has presented to both
mainstream music video and art
Be able to closely analyze a music video clip in relation to issues of the aesthetics of
blackness
This project is the opportunity to be creative and self-determining in how you accomplish this
task. At the same time, it is understood that some guidelines or expectations will be helpful in
focusing your many possibilities into a tangible project. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Find your subject: In other words, what are you going to look at further? For example,
are you going to look at black visual intonation, black intentionality, disembodied
blackness, anti-blackness, afro-futurism, legibility/illegibility of black expression,
basically any of the topics weve covered in class.
Find an object: This is the thing you will study. It can be a music video, film,
commercial, publication, etc. It can be an original work (creative project) or the work of
another (research paper) so long as you can provide a copy of it to be seen.
Find your research: Using at least two in-class readings and one outside source, justify
your point of view.
Because of the challenges presented by learning at a distance, group final projects will no
longer be accepted.
Doing your own creative project will still require a small written component where you provide
one paragraph on each of the following:
When and why was this project made?
What is this project studying and how? (refer to Find your subject and Find your
research above) this should cite related readings as detailed above
Talk about the process choices made to create this work (creative, production) and
how those choices relate to the course material.
If applicable, mention how the current pandemic adapted your planned project.
If you choose the work of another, you are essentially choosing the paper option:
As you compose your paper, please follow these guidelines carefully:
1. Complete using a 12-point Times New Roman font.
2. Please begin your paper by placing your name, the course title, and the
date in the upper left-hand corner as follows:
Your Name
FLME 4780
Date
3. Give your paper a title, centered, bold and underlined.
4. Indent the beginning of all sentences that begin paragraphs. Please make sure you use
paragraphs. A paragraph should not take up a whole page or more.
5. Double-space all text within your paper (including the identifying information you
place in the upper left-hand corner of the first page).
6. You must formally cite at least two readings from class and one outside source
throughout.
7. The whole paper should be between 1000 and 1200 words (between 5-6 pages)

Using the Project Planner’s Toolkit

Resources: Ch. 16 of Management: A Practical Introduction, Appendix: The Project Planner’s Toolkit and the Excel Template

Apply the concepts of the tools described in the Project Planner’s Toolkit.

Refer to the Excel Template as an example.

After studying and evaluating the components included in the Project Manager’s Toolkit, evaluate which of the tools (Gantt Chart or Flow Chart) would be most appropriate for each of the following tasks and use that tool to complete the task.

Outline the steps involved in undertaking a job search and choosing a job. Include an analysis of the advantages and limitations of the tool as well as ideas for ways you can use the tool in business.
Build a schedule showing the steps for planning and preparing for your vacation. Include a description of the advantages and limitations of this tool and ideas for ways you can use it in business.

Combine the charts into one file.

School Information

School Information
You receive an email from a student at your former high school, asking about life at your college. Read the message below, then write a response.

To: ______
From: Penny Garzon
Subject: Questions About College Life

Hello _____,

I’m a sophomore at ______ high school, and I’d like to know more about California State University, San Bernardino. You might remember my sister, Marguerite Garzon, who graduated with you. She went to Ohio State University, but I’m looking at other options.

Will you please tell me how you like school and answer a few questions for me:

How difficult is the work? Is the workload much more than what we have in high school? Is it manageable if I also have a part-time job during school?
How accessible are the instructors at your school? Do they have time for you one-on-one?
What’s the social life like at your school? Are fraternities and sororities popular? What do people do for fun?
Does your school have a debate club? I’m on the debate time in high school, and I’d like to join a club in college. What are my options?
Thanks for giving me your perspective. This will help me make a decision about whether to apply to your school.

Penny Garzon

Audience
Remember that you’re writing to a high-school student. For example, when Penny asks about the workload, tell her more than just credit load. Help her understand the difference between high school life and college life by including the hours/week requirements for a typical class load (including lectures, homework, etc.).

Purpose
To help Penny understand college life, be as specific and detailed as possible. Share stories and experiences that will help her gain a better perspective of life at college. For example, if you’ve scheduled an appointment with a Professor during office hours, describe it to Penny. On the other hand, if you don’t have any experience with CSUSB fraternities or sororities (and many students don’t), be sure to explain that.

Structure
Penny’s email included four bullet points in the body of her email. Answer all of her questions. Your response should include at least six paragraphs: introduction, four body paragraphs, conclusion. Your body paragraphs should be in the same order as her questions.
Style
Be personal. Penny is a family friend. Choose a friendly, informal writing style.
