lab

This lab will enable you to explore the concept of visual imagery. Please review Link Word experiment in the CogLab Manual.
After analyzing your individual data, write up your lab report following the template provided. In the discussion section address the following question: How does forming an interactive image between a concept that you are unfamiliar with a familiar concept help you with the recall of the unfamiliar item?

Laboratory Report Template

I will break it into pages ..this is just to help with answering some questions..
Title Page

TITLE

Attention: all text should be indented except for the abstract and headings. Check the APA formatting guide for correct formatting of lab reports (Times New Roman, 12 points, double-spaced, 1 margins on all sides, use hanging indents for references)

Abstract

Starts on Page 2 Limited to a 100 words that describe the experiment and the results of the experiment.

Introduction

Starts on Page 3 Introduces the topic under investigation. For the purposes of these laboratory reports, you need only summarize the concepts under investigation in the CogLab (e.g. attention, memory, decision making) in 1-2 pages. Make sure you support your assumptions with references.

Methods

You can omit the participant section and begin with Procedures, describing the experimental procedure and variables (independent and dependent) and then Materials (the online materials used). The Procedure and Materials section headings are flush left.

Results

In 1-2 paragraphs, describe the results of your experimentif you choose you can, in addition to the description include a table of your data. In addition to your own results, include and analyze group and global data. Dont include any explanations of the results in this section.

Discussion

In this section you will explain your results based on the readings and answer the questions presented by the instructor for each assignment in 1-2 pages. Make sure you support your explanations with references.

Evaluate the Character of Huck Finn

I need to give some explanation as to how I want you to attack this prompt. First, I want you to completely avoid first or second person. State facts, not opinions (and if they are opinions, make them facts). Second, I want you to go about proving Hucks ideal nature by using the literature we have read during the course so far(Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Henry James, Stephen Crane, Willa Cather, TS Eliot Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, E.E. Cummings, Langston Hughes, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, Tennessee Williams (part one) Tennessee Williams (part two), Ralph Ellison, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Allen Ginsberg, Gwendolyn Brooks, Raymond Carver)
as your basis of what an ideal American is. Let me give you a few examples that are incorrect but that will get you thinking correctly. Perhaps you want to claim that Huck is notably religious, much like Mary Rowlandson, and therefore is ideal in his spirituality. Perhaps you want to claim that Huck is politically-engaged like Frederick Douglass and Phyllis Wheatley, and therefore he meets the standard for ideal because of his political consciousness. While my above examples are incorrect, you can see that I want you to take Huck and place him as a character in the larger context of American literature.

As always, it is not just your claims that matter but also your proof. You will need to stick closely to the texts and use them as your proof, so make sure to include relevant quotes in your paper. The closer you are to the text, the more likely you are to be right. I will also ask that you fully cite all sources, including the different sources from your book.

One other note, I am not concerned with whether you agree or disagree with the prompt. You can do either. But, I want you to stay formal with your paper by avoiding first person, avoiding writing about the paper itself (i.e.: In this paper), and simply dropping the prompt in as the thesis. The challenge of this paper is twofold. First, you need to decide on what the ideal American is and then define this for your reader. Second, you need to go to other texts to support yourself, showing how Huck embodies the qualities of others. Think of trying to show Huck as the culmination of all prior characters, and this may help you shape this paper accordingly.

Health Screenings

For decades, public health, the government, and the news media have preached the mantra of early detection, and spent millions of dollars to spread the word.  Now, the hypothesis that increased screening at all costs, is vital to health and longevity is being questioned.  Researchers and bioethicists are beginning to question the outcome vs. costs, and potential for harm vs. potential benefit.  The United States Preventive Services Task Force now recommends that most women delay the start of routine mammograms until they are 50, rather than 40.  It also recommended that women receive the test every two years rather than annually, and that physicians not train women to perform breast self-examination.  They also recommend delaying Pap smears until age 21- regardless of sexual history, and then to be performed every three years from ages 21-65 (with adjustments for certain clinical considerations), asserting that mammograms and Pap smears can cause more harm than good for women of certain ages.

As public health professionals, we realize the immense good that comes from health screenings, but we still have to weigh out the pros and cons, as well as potential ethical issues, which may become increasingly more salient with increased technological advances (an example would be genetic testing to assess disease risk and treatment options leading to the potential for rationing health care).

Sustainable Housing

This module discusses the problems with suburban sprawl and the merits of smart growth policies and new urbanism priniciples, which include higher density development, mixed-used, walkable places. For this assignment, I’d like you to reflect on the places that you have live or visited thinking of the module content. Think about the following questions as you prepare to write your reflection:

How do your experiences living in communities that are either suburban/low-density or higher density/walkable compare to the content in this module? For example, if you grew up in a suburb – how does your experience compare with the problems identified in the book chapter? If you have lived in a higher density, walkable place, was your experience consistent with the content in the module?
How are your preferences for higher or lower density development shaped by your experience living or visiting places?
At a time when we are living with a pandemic and asked to maintain social distancing, how does living in a higher or lower density community affect quality of life?
Write a 1 1/2 -2 page, double-spaced reflection paper using the questions above as suggested prompts. You do not need to respond to all questions and are free to reflect on some other aspect related to the content and your experiences with places.
