Your task for this assignment will be to construct your own literacy autobiography that gives a detailed and
specific account of the various ways that you encounter language both in school and outside of school. For thi
essay, you may wish to construct a chronological literacy narrative in which you describe your experiences wit
how your literacy practices reflect language usage, or you may wish to provide a non-chronological analysis. In
either case, you’ll address the following questions:
What are the differences between the way you use language at home and how you use it in academic or
professional settings?
What types of literacy practices do you use to read and writing different settings, and how do they reflect your
choices in using home and school or professional language?
To complete this assignment, you will want to refer to specific and detailed examples of how your written home
and academic or professional language uses differ. In order to achieve these ends, you are encouraged to
explore written communication through alphabetic text, visual rhetoric, printed texts, and digital communication
(including text messaging, e-mail, social media, and web forums). To do this, you might consider writing
portions of the essay in your home language, and then translating and analyzing the significance, a bit similar
to Anzaldúa’s approach in “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.”
