Ethics Topic Prescription Drug Prices at Valeant Pharmaceutical.

Apply two (no more, no less) of the moral frameworks we have learned about to your case study – that is,

use these theories to explain what the main moral failure or failures are in the case study. (Is it only one

big failure, or is it a bunch of little ones?) The frameworks you can use are: utilitarianism, human rights

(as articulated by the UN’s Universal Declaration and Ian’s Guidelines for Reasoning with Human Rights),

Rawls’ theory of justice, Anderson’s remarks about private government, Superson’s theory of sexual

harassment, stockholder theory, and stakeholder theory. Be specific in how you apply the two theories.

For example, if you apply utilitarianism, it’s not enough to say “this is wrong because it makes people

unhappy”; you also have to say why or how it makes people unhappy. Similarly, if you apply human rights,

it’s not enough to say “this behavior violated so-and-so’s human rights”; you have to say which right(s) it

violated and how it violated them. If you think there is something else that is morally important about the

case study (e.g. something that is fishy to you, but that your two frameworks ignore), briefly explain what

that is and why you think it’s important at the end of the paper.

Sociology on age

Develop a paper using your sociological imagination (see Handout) in an analysis of how aging has

affected your life experiences to date. This does not mean that you are to write a simple biography of your

life. Instead, using your sociological imagination requires you to step “outside of yourself” and

demonstrate how social structures (in this case the social definition/treatment/process of age/aging) have

affected the choices and outcomes that you have experienced. For example, how has age structured your

educational history and/or others expectations? Have you ever been in a situation where your age was an

issue and how did that affect you and others (for example, were you ever a supervisor of someone much

older than yourself…was that experience different than supervising your age peers or younger persons?,

Etc.)

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

  1. How does someone acquire (get) Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy? Is DMD inherited from a person’s

parents or do they get it from the environment? Explain.

  1. Who is more likely to acquire DMD, boys or girls? Why is that? Could a person have a mutated gene for

dystrophin but not have DMD? How?

  1. Genes include information used to make something in cells. What is supposed to happen with the

information on the gene for dystrophin and what happens when a person has a mutation of the gene?

  1. What is the function of dystrophin in muscles? How does a mutation
    affect the function of dystrophin?
  2. If we found a way to repair a single cell with the mutated gene for
dystrophin in a 2-year old child, could we cure DMD by repairing that single cell?

Criminal Justice Research Methods

A researcher in the Criminal Justice Department at Temple University was asked to conduct an evaluation

study of the Philadelphia Drug Treatment Court. In order to do this, he was given access to all drug court

participants in the last year (a total of 5000 drug-involved offenders). The researcher plans of using a 500

-case sample and to select the sample he will use a computer generated program that will select every

10th drug court participant on the list.
What type of sampling design is this?
What should the researcher do before he selects the sample (to prevent any type of sample bias)?
Can the study’s findings be generalized to all drug courts in the United States? Why or why not? Explain.
