Problems Related To Research

Description

Warm-up Activity 2.1

The Internet contains much valuable information for researchers, as well as commercial and private sites that offer information that may be biased or not based on fact. View the Northcentral Information Literacy Tutorial to review some pointers on finding appropriate sites for research on the Internet.

Warm-up Activity 2.2

The United States government, as well as some state and local governments, keeps careful statistics of the incidence of behavior and psychological problems. Different departments within the United States government keep statistics on problems and on programs and research on the problem. For example, the Department of Justice keeps statistics on crime—including types of crime, gender and race of perpetrator, the location of the crime, and various programs to prevent crime or deal with criminal behavior. Laws for workplace compensation for distress suffered in the workplace can also be found in government databases. Be sure to consult the Northcentral University library for further information on how to search government sites efficiently, or start with the following library link: https://library.ncu.edu/dw/index/331. Some government websites are also listed in the supplemental resources.

Mindfulness in Everyday Experiences

Anonymous
Mindfulness has its roots in the meditative practices of Buddhist meditation, which many spiritual leaders and psychologists have recognized for their correlation to wellbeing. Mindfulness as it is defined and applied within psychology is not synonymous with the traditional Buddhist concept of mindfulness, however, since in the psychological field it is usually removed from its religious and cultural context. Mindfulness-based CBT, rather, is inspired by this tradition and was specifically designed to treat people with anxiety disorders. Mindfulness practices have proven effective at reducing stress levels, and their popularity continues to grow as more practitioners incorporate them into their treatment plans.

This week, you explore mindfulness and acceptance-based CBT approaches through the Learning Resources. You also explore treatment outcomes for different issues to which it has been applied and reflect on a simple mindfulness exercise that you complete at home. You will continue your practice of mindfulness techniques during the residency week.

To prepare:

View the MCBT Raisin Exercise: Mindfulness Meditation Practice media program found in the Learning Resources.
As you view the media program, follow along with Dr. Rampes and complete the activity using all of your senses during the experience.
With these thoughts in mind:

Write your feelings about your experience during the raisin exercise. What did you find interesting? How does this experience relate to mindfulness?

The use of EBP as a foundation for decision making

Can our society adjust to the use of EBP as a foundation for decision making by the actors within the criminal justice system? Or is this just a “fad”?
Can a country like the United States, which has more of its population incarcerated than any other nation, feel comfortable and safe incarcerating fewer people and instead using EBP to cater to the needs of specific inmates? Can society take that risk?
Can law enforcement rethink policing and police based on evidence and not tradition?
Can courts view “justice” with an evidence-based foundation?

Profit health care organization

Description

Working in the billing department for a large, for-profit health care organization has been a dream come true for Nicki Knowitall and she is excited about her future opportunities. Nicki has been with the company for two and a half years and was just promoted to senior Medicare Billing Specialist. Since Nicki has been dealing with Medicare for over two years, she jumps right in and continues with the same billing practices she has been using and trains her staff with these techniques.
Because Nicki’s new position allows her to view information that she was not previously privy to, she has started to notice some discrepancies surrounding the way many of the Medicare invoices are coded. She pulls several of these invoices and shows them to her supervisor. The supervisor informs her that this is how they will continue to code these documents and that Ms. Knowitall should focus solely on training and monitoring her staff. Nicki finds the response she received to be very strange, but nevertheless, she goes back to her work.
Six months pass and Nicki has grown more distraught as she has collected literally thousands of invoices that are coded incorrectly, but there is nothing she can do to change them at her level. She does not feel comfortable approaching her supervisor again, and she is concerned that going higher up the chain of command may make it even worse. To compound the problem, Nicki reads in the local paper that another facility in the system that she works in is being investigated for Medicare fraud.

Should Nicki quit her job, speak to her supervisor, and/or go over her head to others in the chain of command? Explain and cite reasons for your answers.Nicki has kept thousands of documents that she believes are fraudulent in nature. What should she do with these? Should she provide them to her supervisor? The media? Why or why not? What laws, if any, are you familiar with that may help to protect Nicki? Explain your answer and detail the provisions of these laws.In your mind, does this case present an issue of fraud, abuse, or both? Explain.Pretend that you are Nicki. You want to do the right thing, but you aren’t sure what that is. Where do you start? Outline a path for Nicki to follow.
