Lymphatic Malformations

Malformations in the lymphatic system, called lymphangiomas, are overgrowths of the one-way lymph
channels. Rarely, in infants and children, these channels grow abnormally large and cause deformity or death if the overgrowth chokes off a child’s airway or interferes with other aspects of heart and lung function. The
deformity tends to grow with the child, worsening over time and is difficult to treat.
Physicians at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford (Links to an external site.) discovered, essentially by accident, that a common drug – sildenafil, a.k.a. Viagra – appears to shrink the overgrown vessels. They gave sildenafil to a child with a severe lymphangioma to treat another condition, pulmonary hypertension and noticed that the lymph malformation shrank significantly. Unfortunately, the child’s underlying condition was so
severe that she later died; however, two subsequent patients have done well on the medication.
“There has been no medical treatment for lymphangiomas; now all of a sudden there may be one,” said Al
Lane, MD, a co-author on the NEJM letter published January 2012 and an investigator on the lymphangioma research now being conducted. The mechanism by which the drug could resolve the malformations is not known, however, there’s a possibility that sildenafil may help to open and drain the channels,” Lane said.
The drug (Viagra) has been used to treat pulmonary hypertension in children. Its typical side effects in children are nausea, headaches and cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose or fever, Lane said. Spontaneous erections are possible but are an infrequent side effect. Discuss your thoughts on studying and utilizing Viagra
as a treatment for lymphangioma and its side effects in children.

An annotated bibliography

Write an annotated bibliography including at least six sources. An annotation is a summary or an evaluation, and
a bibliography is a list of sources (in MLA style, we call this a “Works Cited” page). A bibliography includes as
much bibliographic information as possible (the author, title, publisher, etc.).
The annotated bibliography is an excellent tool to help you find more information on your research topic and to
begin organizing that information. This assignment will not look like any of your other essays. There is a certain
format you should follow (see the sample on the Annotated Bibliographies handout), as well as certain
information that should be included in each entry.
You are welcome to use the two sources you evaluated and analyzed for the first two essays. Beyond meeting
the required number of sources, each annotation should include a portion that summarizes, assesses, and
reflects on the source.
Think of these annotations as short, clear, and concise source evaluations. Summarize the author’s main idea(s),
assess how each author makes his or her argument, and reflect on how you could use the source in your own
research. Each section should be 1-2 sentences long.
The goal for this assignment is to help you work towards the final research project. Annotated bibliographies are
a great way to keep research organized and keep track of the purpose of each individual source.
Annotated Bibliography Checklist:
You must include six sources. At least three of these sources must come from GALILEO. One of these three
should be scholarly or academic in nature.
Each source must be properly cited in MLA format. Sources should be alphabetized and include the following
annotations:
A summary (1-2 sentences)
An assessment (1-2 sentences)
A reflection (1-2 sentences)
THE SIX SOURCES TO BE USED ARE:
