Conceptual analysis in philosophy

An important aspect of philosophical thinking is the ability to do conceptual analysis. Greta ChristinaPreview the document’s paper is a great example of this. Throughout her paper, she proposes a definition of sex, discusses how that definition captures several cases that intuitively count as sex, but then discusses some more complicated cases that either show that the definition is too broad (i.e., it includes or counts some case as an instance of sex when intuitively it should not) or too narrow (i.e., it excludes some case from counting as an instance of sex when we intuitively think it should count).

This paper assignment is divided into two parts.

Part one:

Expand on one of Greta Christina’s several different definitions of sex and explain how that definition is problematic. For example, Christina says, “Perhaps having sex with someone is the conscious, consenting, mutually acknowledged pursuit of shared sexual pleasure.” You might explain this definition (or one of the other ones that she considers) by giving a (fictional) example and showing how it exemplifies each of the features listed in the definition. Then, you should explain why that definition is problematic. For example, you could explain how there are cases that we intuitively count (or don’t count) as sex but aren’t (or are) counted as sex according to the definition (i.e., state whether the definition is too broad or too narrow, or both, and show how).

Part two:

This part has two options. The first is less challenging than the second, but the second, if done well, can score higher points than the first.

Option 1 : Clearly articulate a second definition from Christina that attempts to address some of the problematic aspects of the definition you discussed in part one. Then, as you did in part one, explain how even this second definition could be problematic (Is it too broad? too narrow? both? Show how).

Option 2 : Propose your own definition — a definition of sex that Christina does not consider. Show how that definition might handle some of the complicated cases that she discusses. Then, clearly state what the shortcomings of your proposed definition might be. For example, you should clearly state how the definition could be too broad or too narrow (or both) by presenting relevant counterexamples.

Jaws

Give yourself plenty of time to read the first article (do not read the primary source until after this analysis is done).
Analyze the secondary source article using the questions listed below (drawn from the Campus Library at UW Bothell and Cascadia College).  Do NOT complete in short answer – this is an essay.  It will work best if you view each major grouping as a paragraph, therefore ending with a 5 paragraph paper.
Before you turn in the assignment, work your way through what you have written, highlighting and commenting to show where you answered each of the questions listed below.  This exercise will allow you to double check your work, and prevent you from writing a summary instead of an analysis.  A complete analysis will have 17 comments that I can see.  You will find the New Comment prompt under the Review tab at the top of your paper. Here is a video to describe how it is done.  https://support.office.com/en-us/article/video-insert-and-review-comments-in-word-5d50bf36-a069-41d5-b805-ceacd0762cdc (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Introduction
What is the article title?
Who are the authors?
Thesis/position/argument/question – What is the primary argument made by the author/s?
2.  Context

Why is the argument significant?
When was the article written?
Which journal/source published it?
Who is the intended audience?
3.  Evidence

What evidence does the author offer in support of the position put forth? (Identify all pieces of evidence you find.)
How convincing is the evidence?
Are the ethical considerations adequately explored and assessed?
Have you read/heard anything on the subject that confirms or challenges the subject from a scientific point of view?
4.  Counter arguments

What arguments are made in opposition to the authors views (within the article or that come to you as you read, you do not need to look for outside sources)?
Are these arguments persuasively refuted?
5.  Effectiveness

What are the strengths of the article?
Is it difficult to read and understand the article? If so, why? If not, why not?
Are you able to follow the moves of the article from thesis to evidence?  In other words, was the article logically organized so that it flowed easily from topic to topic?
Does all of the material seem relevant to the points made?

Spam Activity

Provide a short narrative on security techniques and mechanisms in protecting against spam activity.

Capture a spam Email message. View the Email header and copy the information to your assignment document. Only one email is necessary.

You do not need a reference for this assignment. You only need to show the header information.

Showing the Email itself is not sufficient. You need to show the header information embedded in the message metadata.

Search the Internet if you need help capturing the header information. Points will be deducted if the header information is not present in the assignment.

An image of the message is not sufficient.

A narrative is acceptable, but header information must be presented.

Case Study: Vitality Health

1.State the problems or problems that exist within the company. Begin your paper with a statement of the main problem. Your problem statement should not be an exhaustive list of everything that is wrong. Rather, it should be one or two central issues around which all else are organized. You should be able to state a problem in three sentences, or less.

  1. Problem Analysis. Provide an analysis of each of the problems that you previously stated. This is where you identify relevant facts from the case and apply a conceptual model to diagnose the problem. Analyze the problem you identified (and not some other problem). Organize the facts into a coherent whole as if you were presenting evidence to persuade a skeptic. Clearly state any assumptions that you’ve made. Provide evidence from the case to support your analysis: use quotes, numbers, and facts from the case or other sources. Analyze the problem using a conceptual model from the readings or lectures. Apply the conceptual model fully and explicitly; don’t “cherry pick.”
  2. State the potential solutions for each problem and the advantages and disadvantages of implementing each solution. Do not just repeat the solutions shown in the case – provide at least 2 new solutions.
