midterm

Respond to TWO of the questions below in two well-written essays. Demonstrate your understanding by using your own words and ideas, not simply copying language from the text.

Each response must consist of AT LEAST ONE FULL PAGE. Upload BOTH responses (in one document) to the Midterm Essay folder in Assignments. Outside of paper length, be sure to follow the Paper Guidelines outlined on D2L. Email me if you have any questions.

CHAPTER 1
Based on the material in Chapter 1 of Gendered Lives, describe three cultural structures and practices that reflect and promote a cultures views of gender and sex. Use examples from US culture, your ethnic culture, or your own experiences to explain how these structures and practices function.

CHAPTER 2
What does Judith Butler mean by saying that gender should be viewed as a verb, not a noun? What are the implications of this view of gender? Relate your response to what youve read about the performative theory, and use examples from your own experience or current events to support your answer.

CHAPTER 3
In class, we discussed the importance of intersectionality in feminism. Your authors write about this concept in the section on Contemporary Feminism. Why is it important for feminism to be intersectional? Relate your ideas to such movements as multiracial feminism and transfeminism, as well as others in your text. Use your own experiences and examples from current events to support your response

.CHAPTER 5
Your authors describe feminine and masculine speech communication. Which of these characteristics seem most comfortable and/or natural to you? What communication practices do you use most often with your peers? (Your communication style need not match your sex or even your gender identity.) Be specific, and use examples to support your response

video response

Watch the film Miss Representation on Kanopy. [https://neiu.kanopy.com/video/miss-representation-0].

After you watch the movie, relate what youve seen to what youve read in your textbook, and ideas weve discussed in class. Consider such elements as how gatekeepers are responsible for the view of women presented by the media; how the under-representation of women, and other groups, affects how society sees them; how advertising sets standards for the expectation of female beauty; and how the media normalizes violence against women.

The following are some questions you might consider for your paper. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ANSWER ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS. In most case, ONE question would provide you with enough material for a full paper

.Questions for Discussion:

The director and interviewees in Miss Representation talk candidly about their experiences with sexism. What connections or empathy did you feel with the experiences presented in the film? What are your unique experiences?

Some critics claim the glass ceiling no longer exists for women in entertainment. Others argue that the successes of Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin indicates that sexism is a thing of our past, not our present. What do you think?

The opening title sequence shows real iconic women throughout history, such as Hattie Caraway and Dr. Condoleezza Rice, and the popular celebrity faces we see on-screen. What contradictions do you see between the real women around you and what you see in the media?

Academics argue that harmful representations of women persist because the media uses hyper-sexualized images to sell products/ideas/services. Who or what benefits from the misrepresentations of women in the media? Who holds responsibility?

How does a lack of diversity in decision-making roles impact what we see in mainstream media and advertising? What impact does this have on us as consumers?

What power do we have as a consumer? How can we change the way media portrays women and girls and the ways in which women and girls view themselves?

What strategies are working to promote more women to leadership positions and make sure they are respected when they arrive?

Pattern Recognition

I need you to write a paper on Pattern Recognition for the poem “I  hear America singing” by Walt Whitman. It must be min. 750 words and 5 paragraphs. Paragraph 1 is intro. Paragraphs 2-4 is evidence of pattern recognition using a quote in each paragraph. Paragraph 5 is conclusion.

Behavior analysis

For each of the following scenarios, write a response that includes an operational definition of the behavior being addressed, a clear description of an extinction procedure, other principles of behavior analysis that you might use in conjunction with extinction, any questions you might ask the parents/caregivers in this situation, and special considerations you might have for addressing potential obstacles. IMPORTANT: For this assignment you will complete the above work for EVERY scenario described below.

1. Carly is a three year old typically developing child. When her parents turn off the tv, she cries for up to half an hour. Sometimes, she cries, drops to the floor, and kicks. On occasion, she will even kick her mother. When she begins to cry, her parents attempt to soothe her by bringing toys they know she enjoys.

2. Jos is a fourteen year old with autism. He is nonverbal, but is able to use some signs to request what he wants. When he wants his mother’s attention, he pulls at the bottom of his mom’s shirt. Recently, he has begun to pull very hard on her shirt, sometimes exposing her shoulder or damaging her clothing. His mother says she’s not worried about it when he does this at home, but she is embarrassed when he does it in public, because he won’t let go of her shirt until she figures out what he wants and gives it to him.

3. Martin is a five year old who just started kindergarten. During circle time, he has begun to push and kick his peers. This results in him being removed from the circle to participate in a separate activity with the teacher’s assistant.
