Critique the News

Watch the NASHVILLE, TN News in two formats. The internet/social media to watch local Nashville affiliate newscast. At home I want you to watch a 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and/or 11pm local Nashville affiliate newscast. Do not watch only one channel’s broadcast; I want you to continually flip channels going between ABC (Channel 2), NBC (Channel 4), CBS (Channel 5) and FOX (Channel 17). Take notes on what you like, what you don’t like, what sounds good and what doesn’t sound good about each broadcast. Take note of the following announcing qualities:

The various broadcasters’ use of inflection (upward, downward and middle inflection), rate, pacing and phrasing. Pay special attention to the tone and subtle variations in inflection when delivering the news. Does it sound like they are reading the story or telling the story? Why? • The various broadcasters’ use of pauses and emphasis. • Note the broadcaster’s vocal quality, is he/she sincere, interested, using correct pronunciation & enunciation, and working without vocal mannerisms (accents)? • Note the broadcaster’s appearance and perceived credibility.

After watching the broadcasts and taking notes, I would like you to write a 1-2 page report about your findings. There will be some broadcasting styles that you like, and others that you don’t. Be sure to write about who and what you like and don’t like about the various newscasts, and why. As an aside, note the choice of news stories and their placement in the newscast. Is there a significant correlation between story selection, story placement and the News Criteria that we learned about in class? (Proximity, Timeliness, Human Interest, Significance, Conflict, Prominence).
