Post this response in the main U5 DB thread Unit 5 Discussion Board

Businesses created in the United States are required to comply with U.S. laws and must act ethically. Recall that the law creates a minimum amount of behavior obligatory by businesses in humanity, whereas ethics requires more. Ethics is a major consideration in examining the actions of managers and the function of business organizations. An ethically minded business focuses on the following:

  • Integrity: Focusing on the character of the individuals involved in the decision or action
  • Consequences: Focusing on good and bad decisions
  • Duties, obligations, and principles: Focusing on fairness, justice, and respect for individuals and property

As the manager of your restaurant, you want to have a clear understanding of how to handle ethical issues that arise. You conduct some research and discover there are six steps to ethical decision making.

Tasks:

  • List, explain, and give an example of the six steps of ethical decision making that businesses can follow.
  • Choose a business that you believe acts ethically and is socially responsible. Once you select a business, provide examples of how your company is acting with social responsibility.
  • Finally, decide whether your restaurant is going to be socially responsible by implementing a corporate social responsibility plan; provide an argument that supports or challenges the decision to implement the corporate social      responsibility plan for the restaurant. Provide research, legal terminology, and cite a legal case to support your argument.

Data Collection Techniques [WLO: 1][CLO: 5]

Data Collection Techniques [WLO: 1][CLO: 5]

As you have planned your action research so far in this course, you have come to new understandings about your area of focus and the variables you intend to influence through your planned intervention. Now we will shift to learning about data collection techniques that you can use to determine if your proposed intervention has made a difference. Please prepare for this discussion by reading Chapters 4 and 5 in the Mills (2014) textbook and Chapters 7, 8, and 9 in the Sagor (2000) ebook. Then, create a table similar to the one below, and include the following information:

  • State your research question.
  • Determine one qualitative and one quantitative technique you will use to collect the data needed to answer your research question.
  • For each technique, justify why you would use this technique in your study.
  • Cite at least one source you used in determining your data collection techniques.

This week we will continue our Critical Friends discussion forums to continue to build towards your Final Action Research Proposal. This discussion forum will provide an outlet for sharing the draft the section of your proposal that you created in Week Four, the Intervention Planning and Ethical Considerations – Action Research Proposal. At this point, you may not have your instructors feedback yet in order to make revisions before sharing with peers, which is fine. The purpose of this Critical Friend Forums is to share your current work to get targeted, meaningful feedback from your peers. If you have any particular area(s) that you are struggling with or need more feedback, please request for your Critical Friends to focus their feedback, perspectives, insights, and questions in that specified area. The sections of the Intervention Planning and Ethical Considerations Action Research Proposal (the Week Four assignment) you should include are as follows:

  • Intervention Description
  • Intervention Plan
  • Ethical Considerations Informed Consent and IRB Approval
  • Ethical Considerations Freedom from Harm
  • Ethical Considerations Anonymity and Confidentiality

One of the qualities of great leaders and professionals is to be open to and objective about feedback this is something you will likely need to do in your own professional role, so getting used to seeking and considering feedback objectively is a critical skill for all professionals in any field. Remember that when giving and receiving feedback, it is important to be objective and not take feedback personally. All feedback should be geared toward helping each other construct a quality action research proposal, support success, and encourage critical thinking about action research. Once you have thought critically about feedback you have received, if you disagree with it, that is fine. You can continue to respectfully engage in discussion and build understanding by asking questions and sharing insights and perspectives.
