Watch the interview to Howard Zinn, and carefully read Zinns chapter on European colonialism, and Montejos poem. Take notes while you read, capturing Zinns main line of thinking from beginning to end: what is he arguing? What is his main message? What evidence does he present? How does he argue his case?
Do not focus exclusively on the qualitative data on how Indigenous peoples were massacred: the goal of this assignment is not to talk about European brutality, but to reflect on the uses of history to justify a genocide.

Second, I want you to watch two videos here and then respond. The first is by the current, African American author, Ibram Kendi. He is a New York Times best selling author on combatting racism. Watch his video where he discusses American Slavery. The second video is by a historian as he discussed the Fugitive Slave Laws.

As you watch these, I want you to think about law and slavery. Based upon these two videos and your own outside research (you can use the web) how did the laws during the era of slavery were used to perpetuate the institution of slavery? Any additional sources you use, please list those at the end with a reference. For example, on your own you may want to explore “Slave Codes” and “Anti-Literacy Laws” and discuss these in your response.
