Decision Theory

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), focusing on the brief case study TOMS Puts Its Right Foot Forward, (p. 102).

As a leader, Blake Mycoskie’s decision to make the “One for One” philosophy the central tenet for his organization brings Corporate Social Responsibility to the forefront of the company.

Thinking about the goals of the case, if you were to start a company with the “One for One” philosophy, as a leader, what decisions would you make to combine commercial objectives with social goals to improve the impact of corporate social responsibility efforts? How might the two conflict?

QI/PI Situational Analysis

Identify a performance or system-related problem you might encounter in a hypothetical or real organization.  The problem can be addressed through improving staff performance and/or redesigning processes or systems.

Address all of the below:

Focus on one specific problem
Develop one simple consistent problem statement
Describe the problem (This is the narrative background for how and why you chose the quality/performance improvement issue.  What is the current situation?)
Describe the (hypothetical or real) organization
Name
Location (rural, urban, etc.)
Mission
Number of staff
Other pertinent information about the organization or environment
Specific division, department, or program description
Problem Statement
What is the performance problem the organization or department wants to improve?
Reasons Selected e.g.,
Not serving client or population needs?
Not meeting standards required?
Not meeting internal goals?
High risk?
High volume?
How is the problem being addressed currently (in general terms)?
How do you know the performance should or can be improved?
As you know, in almost every case, it is necessary to form a team to address such a problem.  How would you go about forming such a team?  What talents or skills would you look to recruit? How would you prevent some person or group from dominating?  How would you ensure a balance of conformance and opposition?

Dormant Commerce Clause

  1. The City of Los Loco is located in the State of Confusion, but is on the
border with the State of Washington. For a number of years Loco and the
outlining area had an active granite industry, but recently production has
been declining. To boost production, the City Counsel passed an
ordinance requiring all granite used within the city limits to be (1)
produced within a fifty mile radius of Loco, and (2) within the State of
Confusion. A granite producer, who is located in the neighboring State of
Washington, was set to supply granite to a work site in the City of Los
Loco. Due to the new law, however, it can no longer do so.
Assume the contractor comes to you for advice, and you must explain to
him whether he has a claim under the concept of the “Dormant
Commerce Clause” against the City of Los Loco. Please use the IRAC(important)
format to prepare your advice. For a review of the Dorman Commerce
    Clause please see below

DORMANT COMMERCE CLAUSE AND STATE REGULATION
Three prong test to determine if a state’s regulation of commerce is allowed under the CC:
1.Regulation pursues a legitimate state end;
2.Regulation is rationally related to that end; and
3.Balancing: The burden on interstate commerce is outweighed by the state’s need for the regulation.
