Assessment Criteria
Essays will be assessed on a variety of criteria. These include:
• the extent to which the course aims and learning outcomes have been achieved;
• the use of evidence from the work of scholars to make clear arguments;
• critical engagement with the works of scholars covered on the course;
• the use of good referencing, reflected in citations, ideas, and arguments (which are correctly referenced and integrated into the text);
• the accuracy of the expression (it is important that all coursework is proofread several times before submission);
• imagination and originality (the extent to which you have been able to synthesise the works of others and develop your own view of their work).

WORD LIMIT
The word limit for the essays is 1,500 words (students may go over or under the limit by 10%).
The word limit runs from the Introduction to the Conclusion of the assignment and includes quotes and footnotes/endnotes which appear in the body of the assignment. The word limit does not include the following: diagrams, graphs, images, or bibliography.
The lecturer will mark an assignment only up to the word limit. The part of the assignment which exceeds this limit will not be marked. Feedback will be provided, and it will be explained that the penalty has been applied.

Where you have included a lot of material outside the module scope in your bibliography or where other aspects of your assignment lead to suspicion of academic misconduct, including ‘ghosting’, you may be required to attend a meeting to confirm your authorship.

PRESENTATION OF COURSEWORK
Submitted work must be well presented, legible and, where appropriate, in good, standard English. The use of word processing and spell checking is essential in producing written work. As a rule of thumb, work should be presented in Times New Roman font, point 12, double-spaced or in Arial font, point 11, double-spaced with a 2.5 cm margin on either side of the page. You should always include your student number and module code in the header of the essay and the page number in the footer.

1) Define the diagnosis, or diagnoses that your person of interest or movies character suffers with. This must include diagnostic criteria according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V).

2) You must defend your diagnostic impression by describing the symptoms, behaviors, thought patterns exhibited, and feelings expressed by the main character or person of interest and relate them to the diagnostic criteria according to the DSM-V.

3) Identify the abnormal characteristics exhibited, and suggest possible research based causal factors for the behavior(s) and/or diagnosis.

4) Finally, include acceptable and/or standard research-based treatment interventions for the particular diagnosis. Include a prognosis for stabilization and/or improvement both with and without treatment.

5) This Term Paper must be a minimum of six full typed text pages, double-spaced with a font no larger than 12, and adhere to APA format. Remember, APA format requires a title page and a reference page with page insertion. You do not need to have an abstract page. It must include at least four scholarly sources with appropriate citations throughout. One source must include the DSM-V (you can use your textbook when referencing the DSM-V since the textbook does reference the DSM-V throughout). Just be sure to list the DSM-V on your reference page.
You will be required to select a person of interest in the media or the main character in a movie that appears to suffer from a mental health disorder.

All sources must be listed in your bibliography (5 points), which should be attached to the essay. 4. The main part of your essay should include information about at least 3 research articles related to your topic. Articles should be from reliable sources (see below). 5. You should end your essay with a conclusion statement. The conclusion should include a summary of your research as well as a statement about the larger implications for human and/or public health. In your conclusion, you should either support or refute your original topic statement. (Do not simply rehash what you’ve already written. Take your thinking a step further—don’t just “turn off your brain” once you’ve completed the main part of your essay.)
