Week 5 – Journal

Week 5 Journal: Applying Lifespan Development to Life

[WLOs: 4, 5] [CLOs: 1, 4]

Prior to beginning this activity,

  • Read Chapter 15: End of Life: Death and Dying and Chapter 16: A Thoughtful Approach to Life: Aspects of Successful Aging in you required text, Understanding Development: A Lifespan Perspective.
  • Read Chapter 13 Death, Dying, and Grieving in your textbook Essentials of Lifespan Development: A Topical Approach.
  • View the videos The 81-Year-Old Bodybuilder who Inspires Others to Get Fit (Links to an external site.) and Life Lessons From 100-Year-Olds (Links to an external site.).
  • Review your past required readings from Weeks 1 through 4.

In this journal,

  • Reflect on the knowledge, based on theories of development, you have learned during this course
  • Discuss what skills can be developed from having this knowledge.
  • Analyze how knowledge about lifespan development theory can be applied to your goals and career.
  • Evaluate what ethical considerations should be taken when applying these skills.

Your journal this week should be 400 to 500 words and have an introduction and a conclusion as described in the Ashford University Writing Centers resource, Introductions & Conclusions (Links to an external site.). You should exhibit obvious attention to critical thought and understanding of the content, as demonstrated in Samantha Agooss TED-Ed Animation, 5 Tips to Improve Your Critical Thinking (Links to an external site.). You should include citations as needed to support your ideas. As this is your personal reflection about the material this week, your journal should limit the use of quoted material. Proper grammar should be applied, for which you should consider using the Writing Centers Grammarly (Links to an external site.) resource. At minimum, cite your text to support your assertions within your explanation, but you may also use additional scholarly sources. The Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. References should be listed following the reflection. You will have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (Monday) to deliver this journal reflection.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric (Links to an external site.) for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

PHI Critical Thinking Webtext Chapter 2

1.The article cites sociologist Nancy DiTomasos argument that Discrimination today is less about treating people from other groups badly, and more about giving preferential treatment to people who are part of our in-groups. Provide an example that either supports or refutes this claim.

2. Give an example where a bias in favor of a particular group could result in poor critical thinking.

3. Give an example of a culture you identify with, and of a habit or belief that you have acquired as a result of that culture.

4. Arziel, an American, holds a stereotype that Islamic countries are violent places. Consequently, she turns down the opportunity to go on vacation to a safe part of Indonesia solely because she reads that Indonesia is a primarily Islamic country, and she assumes that she will be attacked if she travels to the country.
A) Explain how Arziels cultural perspective is affecting her critical thinking in this instance.

5. Has anyone ever made an assumption about you based on a stereotype? If so, explain what happened.

6. In what way might a seemingly positive stereotype about a group of people (e.g. African Americans have great rhythm, or Gay men are well-groomed) have a negative consequence?

7. Adichie summarizes the main argument of her talk by stating, The consequence of the single story is this: it robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar.
A) Explain what you think she means by this, and describe whether you agree or disagree and why.

8. Adichie gives a number of examples of times when both herself and people she knows have fallen into the trap of seeing a single story for a group of people. Give an example of a time from your life when you have inadvertently stereotyped a group outside your own.

9. Jonahs thinking was affected by a critical thinking barrier, but that doesnt necessarily mean his decision was a poor one. Explain why.

10. Consider your attitude toward the value of getting a college degree and explain what influences from your culture and background you think led you to that belief.

11. Explain what you believe to be the most compelling premise or reason from the ProCon.org website that supports the conclusion that violent video games do contribute to youth violence and why.

12. Explain what you believe to be the most compelling premise or reason from the ProCon.org website that supports the conclusion that violent video games do not contribute to youth violence and why.

13. Imagine the perspective of a serious gamer who uses video games as a way to relax and bond with friends. How might this person view this issue?

14. Imagine the perspective of the parent of a child who is being bullied by another student who regularly plays violent video games. How might this person view this issue?

Assignment 1 – Media Assignment
This assignment will help you explore the different types of media outlets and the influence that they have on adolescents. The rubric below will be used to assess your work.

Choose a topic that reflects Medias influence on adolescents. For example: body image, violence, female representation, etc.

Introduction:
Write an introduction to this topic that is clear, concise and to the point.  Be sure to include a strong thesis statement that will capture your readers interest.

Body:
Choose three separate examples of media to discuss.  For example, if you were choosing to talk about how violence in media influences adolescents, you may choose to look at a video game, a music video, and a television show.

Discuss each type of media outlet you have chosen.  You are going to identify, summarize and evaluate this media outlet.  Again, if we use violence as our topic and you choose to discuss a video game (example: Grand Theft Auto), you will need to talk about how violence is portrayed, and how this would influence adolescents.  Your evaluation should include a brief discussion regarding the significance of this media outlet.

Conclusion:
Summarize your findings.  As a result of your research on this topic, make some of your own recommendations (minimum of three).  Using the video game example, you could recommend that parents monitor what games are brought into the household until their child reaches a certain age.  Be sure that your recommendations are clear and well thought out.
