Ethnic Notions.

To be completed after watching Ethnic Notions.
Marion Riggs’ documentary Ethnic Notions makes the argument that representations from popular culture historically have helped to create and/or perpetuate notions about groups of people, in the case of the video, African Americans. In doing so, Riggs argues that the racist stereotypes disseminated and reinforced in popular culture have been directly tied to more concrete acts of oppression—from laws and public policy to racial violence and discrimination–by providing “justifications” and rationales for such acts. The video suggests that the legacy of past representations is still with us today and that current images likewise perpetuate certain ideas and perceptions of African Americans, though perhaps more subtly.

Restorative Justice

In the required readings for this week Siegel (2015) and Losoncz & Tyson (2007) discuss Braithwaite’s concept of reintegrative shaming. This conceptualization of shame centers on the emotions felt when standards established by familial or social institutions fail to be met. In many societies around the world shame is a powerful tool of social control, however in the United States the process of informal shaming is often absent. Due to the fact that informal methods of social control are often more effective than legal sanctions in curbing deviant behavior, discuss the concept of reintegrative shaming and how it might be used in a more formal legal system such as that found within the U.S.

• Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Be sure to explain the changes in the arterial blood gas patterns during an exacerbation.
• Explain how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Describe how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for a patient based on the factor you selected.
