I believe that the reason that it is so important to understand the way an individual defines health and health problems is so that we will have the ability to help them to gain better health and face their health problems head-on. As health care professionals we can not just expect our patients to follow what we tell them just because we tell them to do so. For example, I am the typical nurse that makes a horrible patient. I have a heart issue and after seeing 3 physicians it was decided that the best plan of care for me is to have an AV node ablation and pacemaker placed. At this point, I feel like that is a huge commitment. I dont feel that my condition is so bad off and I want to wait until this is something that is emergent. I understand my condition and what consequences I may face for making this choice. To me, this is not yet a health problem that needs to be treated. That being said I feel it is an important implication for us so that we are able to educate our patients and know that they fully understand what they are facing and will face in the future based on how the chose to face their health problems.
The theoretical model of health that is of particular interest to me is the Social Cognitive Theory, Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) describes the influence of individual experiences, the actions of others, and environmental factors on individual health behaviors (RHIhub, 2018). This theory focuses on each patient as an individual and his or her life experiences, this will allow for health care professionals to tailor a plan of care that will best suit each patient individually and increase their chances of following through with their care.
