Knowledgeable/Informed/Reasoned: Format and style (APA)

Global citizenship has become an important, but debated and contested concept. Globalists say that the time for forms of global citizenship has come, arguing for universal moral responsibility, a global identity, and forms of global governance. Communitarians on the other hand, say no. They argue that global identities are not possible or desirable, moral responsibilities adhere locally, and global governance cannot work. REVISION INSTRUCTIONS;

As we discussed, you need to work on two areas in Task 3: Part B – here they are asking for a second consequence of industrialization. Try to focus on things that are directly related to industrialization. How did it change the way people worked, where they worked, how they lived, what they spent their money on, how they travelled etc. Part C2 – here the issue is you are discussing factors from the Reconstruction period when you need to be discussing movements from the later Progressive Era. So read in Chapter 18 and work on getting movements from the right period.

Thread #1:

Using what you know about FDR, how consistent is Executive Order 9066 with his previous actions as president? Does this change your view of him as president? As a man? In your mind does this change his legacy?

Thread #2:

Fred Korematsu’s conviction was overturned in 1984, but the Supreme Court ruling still stands. What was the role of “factual claims” in overturning the conviction?

Thread #3:

After the attacks of September 11, 2001, President Bush declared a “war on terrorism.” Part of this war on terrorism involved the passage of new laws, establishment of warning systems, and increased surveillance.  The Supreme Court heard several cases involving the detention of persons alleged to be “enemy combatants.” Do you believe the government has the right to disregard the people’s constitutional freedoms in times of crisis?

While grading is primarily based upon your understanding and critical analysis of the issue, good form will also be taken into account. Please check carefully for spelling and grammatical errors before submitting your essay.   Remember to cite direct quotations.  As a rule they can be valuable in underscoring a point, but avoid lengthy and excessive quotations: they are boring.  With regard to formatting, you should simply note the author and page number in a parenthetical reference.  For example, “The 1880s witnessed a new wave of labor organizing.  At its center stood the Knights of Labor” (Foner 629).  Finally, do not plagiarize.  No credit will be given for dishonest work.

Here are your prompts: (YOU CAN CHOOSE ONE)

1.  The 1920s witnessed such dramatic technological and social change that it has been called the birth of modern America. And yet there was as much reaction to such changes.  Discuss the tensions between fundamentalism and pluralism in the culture wars of the 1920s.

2.  Did the New Deal solve the problem of the Great Depression? If not, why is it so important?  Discuss the short-term and long-term significance of Roosevelt’s approach to the crisis of the l930s.

3.  According to Eric Foner, “the unprecedented attention to freedom as the defining characteristic of American life had implications that went far beyond wartime mobilization” during World War II. Discuss the ways the war revealed “the American dilemma” and in turn shaped the experience of African Americans and other minorities.

4.  Discuss the rise of containment following World War II. What were the ideas surrounding this emerging Cold War policy? Who were the major players? Was it successful?
