Group Influence

This assignment will give you experience observing and interacting with people outside of the classroom. It has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop skills, synthesize knowledge, and integrate learning in a real-world setting. This goal is accomplished by challenging you to physically attend and observe a group.

Note: Social and family events, religious services, classes, court proceedings, lectures, and sporting events are not acceptable events for the purpose of this assignment.

Purpose: To provide you with an opportunity to experience a group setting and analyze how the presence of others substantially influences the behaviors of its members through social facilitation.

Observe a group discussing a topic of interest, such as a focus group, a community public assembly, a department meeting at your workplace, or local support group.

Study how the group members interact and influence one another.

Analyze how the group behaviors and communication patterns influence social facilitation.

Integrate your findings with evidence-based literature from journal articles, the course text, and additional scholarly sources. The literature should be about group patterns, not about the content of the meeting.

Process: You will participate as a guest at an interest group meeting in your community to gather data for a qualitative research paper. Once you have located an interest group, contact stakeholders, and explain the purpose of your inquiry. After you receive permission to participate, you will schedule a date to attend the meeting; at which time you will observe the members and document the following for your analysis:

  • How were the people arranged in the physical environment (layout of room and seating arrangement)?
  • What is the composition of the group, in terms of number of people, age, sex, ethnicity, and so on?
  • What are the group’s purpose, mission, and goals?
  • What is the duration of the group (short- or long-term)? Explain.
  • Did the group structure its discussion around an agenda, program, or rules of order?
  • Describe the structure of the group. How is the group organized?
  • Who are the primary facilitators of the group?
  • What subject or issues did the group members examine during the meeting?
  • What types of information did members exchange in their group?
  • What were the group’s norms, roles, status hierarchy, or communication patterns?
  • What communication patterns illustrated if the group was unified or fragmented? Explain.
  • Did the members share a sense of identity with one another (characteristics of the group, similarities, interests, philosophy, and so on)?
  • Was there any indication that members might be vulnerable to groupthink? Why or why not?
  • In your opinion, how did the collective group behaviors influence individual attitudes and the group’s effectiveness? Provide your overall analysis.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper incorporating your analysis with evidence to substantiate your conclusion.

Explain how your observations relate to research studies on norm formation, group norms, conformity, and/or social influence.

Integrate your findings with literature from the text, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other scholarly sources.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Social Psychology Case Study

When John Buckingham moved across the country to take a new job, he didn’t expect to run into much difficulty. He would be doing the same kind of work he was used to doing, just for a new company. But when he arrived on his first day, he realized there was more for him to adjust to than he had realized.

Clearly, John had moved to a region where the culture was much more laid back and casual than he was used to. He showed up for his first day in his usual business suit only to find that almost all the other employees wore jeans, Western shirts, and cowboy boots. Many of them merely stared awkwardly when they first saw John, and then hurriedly tried to look busy while avoiding eye contact.

John got the message. On his second day at work John also wore jeans and a casual shirt, although he didn’t yet own a pair own cowboy boots. He found that people seemed more relaxed around him, but that they continued to treat him warily. It would be several weeks—after he’d gone out and bought boots and started wearing them to work—before certain people warmed up to John enough to even talk to him.

1. What does the behavior of John’s coworkers toward John suggest about their attributions for his initial manner of dress?

2. Describe the kinds of biases that might have affected John’s coworkers as they formed impressions of him on his first day. Could they have been using a faulty schema to understand him? Is there evidence of the halo effect?

3. Explain why John changed his manner of dress so soon after starting his new job. What processes were likely involved in his decision to do so?

4. John’s coworkers seemed very hesitant to “warm up” to John. How would you explain to John their initial reluctance to like him very much?

5. If you were the human resources director for this company, what strategies could you employ to prevent experiences like John’s? How would you justify the implementation of these strategies to the company president

Child and Adolescent Development

Unit 7: Social and Emotional: Development of the Self, Gender, and Sexuality

This Assignment assesses the following course outcomes:

HN377-2: Evaluate developmental milestones of behavior based on psychological theories.

GEL1.1: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English.

GEL- 8.3: Formulate a logical solution to a problem.

For your Unit 7 Assignment, you will write a paper in which you act as a human service worker to analyze a case study. The purpose of this paper is to challenge you to use your formal writing/thinking skills to evaluate the scenario using the developmental theories you have studied.

Talia, a 17-year-old biracial (Caucasian/Asian) female, is currently a senior in high school. She lives with her mother and her younger brother. The family is currently struggling financially. Talia’s parents divorced when she was 4 and her father moved away; their contact with him is infrequent. She sometimes feels as though a part of her identity is “missing” as she has learned very little about her Asian background and culture due to the absence of her father over the years. Talia has experienced a drop in self-esteem over the past year due to developmental struggles. She is beginning to feel pressure about her future plans and is having trouble making a decision. She has attended a vocational program for cosmetology during her junior and senior year, but is also interested in teaching or possibly culinary school.

1. Using Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development or Marcia’s approach to identity development, assess Talia’s current struggle with her future plans.

2. Examine the influence of culture and cultural identity on Talia’s situation.

3. Suggest interventions to assist Talia in resolving her current conflict and to improve her self-esteem.
