I completely agree with you that the toddler will become emotionally hurt if the parents “yell”

I completely agree with you that the toddler will become emotionally hurt if the parents “yell” at the child to stop talking and to sit down.  I believe emotional abuse is more difficult to identify then physical, neglect and sexual abuse.  The toddler does not walk around with brusies, dirty clothing and blood in their pants.  With emotional abuse the Toddler can LOOK great but inside they are hurting.  I do agree that parents may not be aware of the emotional suffering they are causing their child.  I know as a parent, I have caught myslef and at times apologized to my child for reacting in a way that they did not deserve.  I believe parenting is one of the toughest jobs, but is the most rewarding job when having the knowledge and skills to parent wisely.  Thank you for your post.

Linda and Tisha I agree that there are many different environments where abuse may take place and it is not always the care giver

Linda and Tisha I agree that there are many different environments where abuse may take place and it is not always the care giver. In a society where children are placed in sports at an early age, parents must be very in tune to how their kids are interacting with their coaches, team doctors etc. These people have positions of authority and most often are not questioned by the child or parents. I use for example the recent news of the team Dr. for USA gymnastics and Michigan state. In the gymnastics world he was highly respected and right under everyones watchful eye he was committing multiplee acts of sexual abuse with young gymnasts. This went undetected for many years. When there were questions of his conduct they were disregarded and he was allowed to continue. Such a failure in our system…if he had not been a well respected Doctor would this have been stopped sooner?

There is a story in Woy Magazine that involves a Haitian father whose 14 year old son quickly realized that in the United States rules were lax and loose compared to back home. The boy had been neglecting his homework and taking money from his parents. The father badly beat him as a way of discipline. From his cultural point of view he was following the ways of his country. This father’s goal is for his children to be polite, gentle, obedient and civil but research show that children who are reared with corporal punishment are more likely to be aggressive and less successful in US (Grogan-Kaylor, 2005; Straus & Yodanis, 1996). The son however called 911 resulting in his father’s arrest. After the court proceedings had resolved the family took a vacation to visit family in Haiti. Upon landing in the airport, the father whipped his son with a leather strap and two days later the family returned to New York leaving the boy in Haiti with relative (Dugger, 1996). This cultural practice is unacceptable behavior in the United States. So the boy is left in Haiti, the law there is not the same in the States.

A 35-year-old male is admitted to a hospital following a minor car accident

Neurological System Case Study

A 35-year-old male is admitted to a hospital following a minor car accident. He was driving home and fell asleep at the wheel. This is the third accident he has had in the past year. He also falls asleep regularly at work, at the dinner table, at church, and, in fact, anywhere. When he becomes excited or enraged, he suddenly becomes weak and falls. At night, he often has bizarre, terrifying dreams. During these dreams, he feels as if he were paralyzed.

Based on the scenario given above, answer the following questions:

  • Describe how a nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to the next.
  • Compare the structure and functions of the CNS and PNS.
  • What is the probable diagnosis for this man’s condition?
  • What parts of the person’s brain could have been affected?
  • What sleep state do these symptoms resemble?
  • How would an electroencephalogram (EEG) look like during the sleep condition of this patient?
  • What type of treatments (physical or chemical) would you prescribe for the patient?
