Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the societies in relation

Ethnographic Comparison

Anthropologists are interested in framing broad hypotheses about human behavior. In order to do this, it is imperative to use examples from multiple cultures to ensure that their conclusions are not grounded in a single case.

In this assignment, you will be taking on the role of an ethnologist, using multiple ethnographic accounts to study human behavior and culture.

Do the following:

  • Identify two to three societies to compare, such as an African society (for example, Ethiopian, Liberian, etc.), Indian, Chinese, Korean, or one of the many Native American groups (for example, the Cherokee, the Inuit, etc.).
  • Choose one aspect of human culture discussed in the course:
    • Domestic life and kinship
    • Subsistence and economy
    • Religion
    • Culture change

Using the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, write a research paper to include the following:

  • Describe the background information of each of the societies you have chosen. You need not analyze this background information, only provide details regarding these societies.
  • Analyze the aspect of human culture you selected for each of the societies.
  • Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the societies in relation to the topic you chose—for example, standard of living, education, or employment opportunities.
  • Summarize and address human behavior in relation to your topic and based on your examples.
    • Address the realities of life for the cultures you have examined.
    • Examine some of the social problems and public policy issues that become apparent.

Your paper should have a title page as well as an introduction section. This introduction section should include the societies you selected as well as the human culture aspect you will be discussing and why it is relevant to anthropology. As an anthropologist, use relevant anthropological terms in your analysis.

Support your statements with examples and scholarly references.

Write a 4–6-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources

Constructing Arguments

The purpose of this discussion is to help you understand how to construct an ethical argument and how to compare ethical arguments to other types of arguments, such as arguments based on political or economic theories. Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:

  • Identify the basic themes, topics, and concepts that make up the discipline of ethics. What are the themes or ideas that unite the different ethical theories? What is it that ethics aims to explain?
  • Describe how you might apply an ethical theme to one of the following social issues:
    • Limiting smoking in public places, such as public buildings, restaurants, or city parks
    • Municipal governments using public funds to build stadiums for professional sports teams
    • Requiring a private landowner to provide habitat for endangered species on their properties

What is your goal when you apply an ethical theme to a specific real-world issue? Distinguish how applying an ethical theme to an issue would differ from applying one of the following perspectives: economics, politics, or religion. What themes might represent the alternative perspective to the issue?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references.Answer

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you answer the following questions: How is the word myth used popularly?

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you answer the following questions: How is the word myth used popularly? For example, what does the statement, “It’s a myth” mean? In contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words. What are the most common mythological themes across different cultures? Why do myths from different cultures around the world address such similar or universal themes? Think about how myths explain the unknown and the tribulations of mankind. What is the relationship between belief, knowledge, mythology, and religion? Where do mythology and religion intersect? Where do they diverge? Think about the function of myth and religion in helping human beings cope with change, suffering, loss, and death. Do you think mythology is still relevant in contemporary culture? How do people resort to modern myths to deal with the unknown and hardships in life? Format your citations and references consistent with APA guidelines. Note that you are asked to craft an essay that answers the above questions. This is not a short answer assignment. Lastly, some of the questions are designed to elicit reflection, the answer to which can be folded into an answer to another question.

Alienation and Nature

Alienation and Nature

The Final Paper is a discussion of the relationships between the contemporary human, religious belief, and nature. The following question should guide your paper: “Is the contemporary human fundamentally alienated from nature?” Defend your answer to this question, and propose a course of action in response. If you believe most people today are alienated from nature, then analyze the root cause of the alienation, and defend your own solution for overcoming alienation. On the other hand, if you believe most people today are not alienated from nature, then defend a hypothesis about why so many people falsely think we are alienated, and determine how you would convince them that we are not alienated. Notice that the overarching question of alienation leads to other questions. As you think about your response to this prompt, consider using the following questions to guide your analysis and arguments. You need not answer all of them in writing, but it will be impossible to write a good paper if you have not at least thought through these issues. What causes human separation from nature? How ought the human spirit respond to nature and dwell within it? What does it mean to say that something is natural, and how does the human fit into the larger web of natural relationships? How does spirituality or religion lead to more harmony or greater fragmentation of the human with nature? If we are still connected with nature, what are the attributes of those who are able to exist within nature while also dwelling within our technology-dependent society? If we are not connected with nature, what are the attributes of our social, political, familial, and natural relationships that force such fragmentation? What is the most appropriate ethical relationship the human ought to have with nature? What are concrete methods humans can use to reconnect with nature or enhance their growing relationship with nature? Are there some cultures that naturally connect more with nature? If so, what might we learn from those cultures if we are not part of them? As you write your paper, explain your thesis about the primary topic. Think about how you will defend your position. Present arguments that support your own position while also engaging arguments that others might use to attempt to refute your position. Try to objectively put yourself in the place of someone who disagrees with your position and address the concerns of the other positions using factual evidence and logical reasoning. Remember that it is not enough to merely state the position. You must defend each position with evidence and argumentation.
