Demand: Q= 100 / N – P
Marginal Revenue: MR= 100 / N – 2Q
Total cost: TC = 50 + Q^2
Marginal Cost: MC = 2Q
A. How does N the number of firms in the market affect each firms demand curve? Why?
B. How many units does each firm produce? (The answers to this and the next two questions depend on N.)
C. What price does each firm charge?

BFA526 Financial Reporting and Analysis

Assignment

Company name for this report is Tasmania Mines Limited

Total word limit (Part 1 & 2):    3000 words (title page, reference list and the appendix are not included in the word count)

REQUIRED:

You have been allocated a Tasmanian publicly listed company.  An investor you know is keen to buy shares in this company and she has asked you to analyse its financial reports (along with other information) and present a report for her.  You will advise her on the potential investment, basing this information on your analysis and interpretation of the financial statements for the years 2014, 2015, 2016, and any other information which you deem important in her decision making.

Part 1

  • Provide an overview of your company and its operations (max 400 words). In addition, identify, explain and critically analyse any use of corporate social responsibility reporting by your company. Use multiple sources and do not just repeat what you find in the company’s Annual Reports [25 marks].
  • Present the ratios (below) for your company, in a table format, for the three years of analysis [39 marks]. This is to be done in preparation for inclusion in your final report (Part 2):

Profitability Net profit margin
Return on assets (you can choose to use net profit before interest and tax – see p326 of your text or the formula given on p324 of your text but be consistent with your choice of formula for all three years)
  Return of ordinary shareholders’ equity

Efficiency Accounts receivable turnover
  Inventory turnover

Short-term solvency Current ratio
  Quick ratio

Long-term solvency Debt to equity
  Debt to total assets
  Leverage ratio

Market-based ratios Price/Earnings ratio (before abnormals)
Earnings yield
Dividend yield

  • Provide the information used to calculate the ratios in an Appendix. This is also in preparation for your final report (Part 2) but must be included in Part 1.
  • Explain the meaning of each ratio (without specific analysis at this stage). This means that you should define and explain the ratio without analysing the specific results that you found [26 marks].  Leave this analysis and interpretation for Part 2.
  • Provide a reference list in accordance with the Harvard Referencing System, which can be found on the University of Tasmania’s Library website [10 marks].

Part 2

  • Provide the full report by incorporating the information from Part 1 of this assignment,
    • Structure the report as follows:
      • Title page
      • Executive summary
      • Table of contents
      • Introduction:
        • Overview of the company and its operations
      • Analysis of the company over three years:
        • profitability
        • efficiency
        • short-term solvency
        • long-term solvency
        • market-based ratios
      • Conclusions
      • Recommendations and limitations
      • List of references (Harvard Style of referencing)
      • Appendix (your data and workings for the ratios)

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Use the database DatAnalysis Premium, found on the University of Tasmania’s Library website, to access information on your company.  Do not limit your report information to this source.

Understand the concepts of financial statement analysis and interpretation. Use Chapter 10 of Hancock et al (2016), your lecture notes and workshop material to assist you in your preparation for this topic.

Provide the ratios required based on the consolidated financial statements (sometimes referred to as the “group”, or “economic entity”), not those of a parent company.

When reporting ratios, put into words exactly what the ratio numbers mean.  Comment also on the trends over the three years that you are examining.

Compare or benchmark the results of your analysis by using industry averages.

Analyse and interpret the ratios that you have calculated. The interpretation should take into account relevant information that may be found outside the financial reports themselves, for example, in the chairman’s report, the company’s web site, the press or other information on the internet.

Take care with writing your report. The report is for a busy person – she is expecting a clear and concise report that is not longer than it needs to be.  Unnecessarily long and verbose reports will lose marks.

Present your ratio-calculations in the Appendix, and then present the results of your calculations in a table in the body of your report.  You may like to include graphs in the body of your report. You may also like to use and include an Excel workbook for your calculations. If so, merge this document into your report in the Appendix.

Prepare a word document for your report.
