Explain what is meant by the terms “ascribed status” and “achieved status.” Discuss a specific example that illustrates how a person’s ascribed status could influence his or her achieved status.

Course activities, and lecture content assigned from Modules 1 through 3. Choose three of the five questions below. For each question chosen, write an essay response of 250-300 words. In your response, be sure to refer to specific concepts from the readings, lecture notes, and/or discussions, and use these concepts to support your points. Please state the question prior to your answer.

Choose a social problem, and explain how the sociological imagination, as defined by C. Wright Mills, can be used to understand the causes and consequences of that problem. Be sure that you address and apply the components of the sociological imagination in your response.
Explain what is meant by the terms “ascribed status” and “achieved status.” Discuss a specific example that illustrates how a person’s ascribed status could influence his or her achieved status.
Compare and contrast Karl Marx’s and Max Weber’s theories of social class. Explain which theory you think is more accurate and why.
What are the key components of culture? Discuss at least three components of culture, giving specific examples of each component.
Why is socialization so important to the development of our self-concept? Explain the role of socialization in shaping our lives, using at least three concepts from the course material in your explanation.

Discuss what the appropriate behavior for the situation you chose would typically require (for example, if you are violating a dress code, discuss what you would normally wear in that situation).

Deviance is the label sociologists use to describe behavior that violates cultural norms. Norms include the expectations and rules that guide our behavior, appearance, manners, gestures, body language, conduct, et cetera. For this assignment, your task is to break a norm and write about your experience, as follows:

Choose one norm to break as long as it is within the guidelines for legal behavior. Examples of acceptable norm violations include dressing in a manner that would be considered eccentric or inappropriate for a given social situation or invading someone’s personal space.

In a 2- to 3-page paper, double-spaced, include the following:

Explain which norm you broke and why you chose it. Discuss what the appropriate behavior for the situation you chose would typically require (for example, if you are violating a dress code, discuss what you would normally wear in that situation).
Discuss why your behavior violated those norms and the reaction you received upon breaking them.
Apply one sociological theory of deviance to interpret the response to your behavior. Begin by briefly discussing the key aspects of the theory you have chosen and then explain why that theory is useful for understanding your norm-breaking experiment. The Why Are People Deviant? lectureprovides an overview of the major sociological theories of deviance.

Prepare a personal development plan (PDP) tailored to the needs of this particular individual and will require interviews with this leader and his or her key followers and supervisors.

Topic: Assessing a Leader

Essay’s will be an assessment of an incumbent leader. During this process, you will create a consulting/coaching report to recommend how this leader can be more effective in his or her role. Thus, your job is to prepare a personal development plan (PDP) tailored to the needs of this particular individual and will require interviews with this leader and his or her key followers and supervisors.
The leader’s personal development plan (PDP) will allow the leader to better understand himself or herself, as an individual, as a member of teams, and as an organizational citizen, as well as to create opportunities for improvement goals. Thus, the PDP provides an understanding of this leader’s current characteristics and how the leader can become more effective in his or her roles as a follower, a leader, and as a team member.
First, articulate the leader’s strengths and weaknesses, values, and personality. An understanding of the leader as a person is needed before describing explanatory theories, concepts, and fit in teams and organizations. This section can include materials from observations, interviews, assessment instruments, and application of objective evidence.

Next, an articulation of theories and concepts to explain the leader’s behavior at three levels of analysis (individual, team, and organization) is needed. In addition, a discussion of factors (contingencies/moderators) that may alter the theory/concept’s operation is needed. This section should include discussion of the following:
Theory/Concepts at the Individual Level (2 pages)

What theories/concepts describe your behavior as an individual?
What factors (i.e., contingencies/moderators) affect the operation of these theories/concepts?

Theory/Concepts at the Team Level (2 pages)

What theories/concepts describe your behavior as team member?
What factors (i.e., contingencies/moderators) affect the operation of these theories/concepts?

Theory/Concepts the Organization Level (1-2 pages)

What theories/concepts describe your behavior as an organizational citizen?
What factors (i.e., contingencies/moderators) affect the operation of these theories/concepts?

The final section looks to the future. Choose and describe at least one developmental goal at each of the three levels of analysis–the individual level, the team level, and the organizational level for the leader. For each development goal, please provide the development goal, development activities (how the leader can work toward accomplishing the objective), resources/support (that the leader has or can develop toward achieving the goal), timeline, potential obstacles, and evidence of progress (i.e., milestones), as shown below:
