The Final Paper provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate your ability to do research and apply the concepts covered throughout the course. This assignment MUST be typed, double-spaced, in APA style, and must be written at graduate level English. You are required to utilize the Internet and the University Virtual Library to research current literature and information to enhance your analysis for this project.

Using the University Virtual Library, find articles from professional journal dated within the past 5 years. A minimum of five (5) research articles are required to complete this assignment. In addition, to the 5 research articles from the University Virtual Library, you may use the internet for additional research on theories of counseling and psychotherapy.

The course text is not to be used for this assignment.

Choose a fictional character(s) taken from popular fairy tales, cartoons, plays, books, movies, or television shows. If you wish to describe a couple or family, you may take multiple characters from the same story. This paper is to be written in two parts and is to be 8-10 pages + a title and reference page. Your paper needs to be based on the actual storyline of the fictional character(s) you choose. You must identify the fictional story you are using. The details of your case/story should only be 1 page of your paper.

The core of your paper is to focus on application of theoretical research, divided into the following:

Part I (Assessment) of the Final Paper: From a therapeutic school* covered in the course, choose 1 therapeutic model (specify). Write a brief Introduction describing the patient(s) and the reason for the referral. Include information that a therapist employing that specific therapeutic model would consider pertinent. Describe the Presenting Problem and the Assessment of the patient(s) from the theoretical model you chose. NOTE: You do not address treatment in Part I. This is to be a theoretical discussion of the case you presented, from the viewpoint of your chosen theory.

Part II (Treatment) of the Final Paper: This is the Treatment Plan. The primary mode of treatment must come from a different therapeutic school* than you used in Part I (specify) and may include more than one model within the therapeutic school you choose.

*Note:  A therapeutic school would be:  Psychoanalytic Therapy, Adlerian Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Family Therapy, Existential Therapy, etc…

Diagnosis may be very briefly mentioned, but is not a focus of this paper.  Focus on “theory”, “research of theory” in direct and specific application to your fictional character/client, in both Part I Assessment and Part II Treatment

How to Approach the Final Paper:

Introduce your client/character in a brief summary of history, clinical presentation and presenting problem. This should be no more than one (1) page.
The core of your paper must be on integration and citation of research on theory.
For example: Client: Cinderella

Introduction: One (1) page summary of Cinderella’s history, clinical presentation and presenting problem

Part I: Assessment of Cinderella using Psychoanalytic Theory, etc. Here you would be assessing Cinderella doing research on the psychoanalytic model. Your assessment of Cinderella would be supported by the research you found.

Part II: Treatment of Cinderella using the Humanistic Model of Treatment, etc. Here you would be setting up a treatment plan for Cinderella doing research on the Humanistic model. Your treatment of Cinderella would be supported by the research you found.
